The Vietnam Films

The stalemate of the Vietnam war caused the American public to be disillusioned. War cannot be held to be a sole issue of the political sphere.

The Vietnam war is a recurring theme in Hollywood since a war can never be contained inside the political sphere. Its emotional consequences had created a turmoil in the American society. The death and agony of the young had questioned the theories behind the Vietnam campaign.Various filmmakers have approached this issue with the objective of criticism, narration and war philosophy.

  1. The Deer Hunter (1978) is about the loss of identity terror can affect on its practitioners. It is impossible to live with two separate personalities of a person of culture and a person who has to face terror without the consolation of culture. The Russian roulette scenes of the film are the contrast to the detached violence of the deer hunting.
  2. Apocalypse Now (1979) is based on the Joseph Conrad Novel ,Heart of darkness. The translation of the theme into the Vietnam context didn’t place the film out of its contemporary meaning.War is futile to the needs of man as Joseph Conrad said, We live like we dream, alone.
  3. Platoon (1986) debates the  cause and effect of the atrocities committed by some of the American soldiers in Vietnam.War being cruel in itself learns to redefine cruelty .The soldiers have to think for themselves a system of justice in a place where they are surviving war instead of fighting one.
  4. Full Metal Jacket (1987) analyzes the breeding of a war cry.The induction for war has to be as cruel as its future . A mania is poured into the minds of the American soldiers so that they move above the restrictions of fear. The tutelage is cruel and life after that corresponding to that cruelty.
  5. Forrest Gump is not a completely Vietnam movie. It features episodes of American soldiers confronting unfamiliar situations. They had to define their lives from a war that was away from their personal interests. The theories of a domino effect spreading communism throughout south east Asia were not helping the turmoil in the American society. War was coming to an end by a stalemate publicized by reporters like Walter Cronkite who is dead now.
