The Page Turner
Young Melanie’s dream to become a pianist shattered by one of the judges. Ten years later, she finds her way into her family and begins her revenge.
This movie is an outstanding story with an ensemble cast. Directed by Denis Dercourt, comes a movie that revenge is everything. Even without any fatalities, hurt and harm are embedded inside the family of a well known pianist.
Melanie is a piano prodigy who foresees a career in piano. However, when she sits on a piano examination, she was distracted by one of the judges, a concert pianist Ariane Fouchecourt by signing an autograph. As a result, she failed. Her dream as a pianist was shattered. She locked her piano and never plays it any longer.
Ten years later, young Melanie finds an internship job in the law firm which owned by Ariane’s husband. Soon, she has the opportunity to work as a governess in Ariane’s family when her husband away. Her intelligence in handling things won her a place in Ariane’s career. She played piano before and has a gifted talent towards music.
Finally, Ariane hired her to become her page turner in her upcoming concert. The quiet and shy Melanie becomes the strength to Ariane where she reassures her every time she performs.
In the meantime, she forms a friendly bond with Ariane’s son, Tristan. She wins his trust and keeps a secret between them. Melanie advises Tristan to practice beyond his capability which injures his hand muscle and might never play again.
By the time Ariane’s big performance, she sneaks out. The panic Ariane ruins the opportunity to get her career back in track after her accident years ago.
Eventually, Melanie is leaving the family. Ariane’s husband comes home, finds out his son could no longer play the piano, and his wife is hopelessly falls for Melanie.
The story is straight forward but with a certainty of psychological thriller element inside. The elegant Catherine Frot portraits her character beautifully as a once famous concert pianist who struggling to hold on to her career and tries to overcome her nerves under Melanie’s reassurance.
Deborah Francois’s performance is undoubtedly stunning. It is her second film and she shines through out the movie as the shy, girl next door governess who plots a perfect revenge for the dash of her dream.
