Stephen King’s 1408

A psychological thriller about a man who will not leave his haunted hotel room, starring John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson.

Cusack enters Fairfield County in a rain storm.  (They have to set the mood.)  His character is a writer of ghost stories. He is rude in the beginning of this movie.  You’re almost happy the he could have drown surfing in California. This event really wasn’t explained and I don’t know how it fits in the movie but later it makes sense.

He calls ahead and insists on room 1408 in the New York Dolphin Hotel.  They beat it into the ground that the hotel room was haunted.  He has this confrontation with the Hotel manager who is played by Samuel L. Jackson.  Samuel L. Jackson’s confident and commanding voice works well with this genre.

Cusack’s character is so cynical it almost ruins the movie for me but I keep an open mind.  Later Cusack’s character becomes the protagonist and the evil becomes the antagonist.

They had such a buildup then nothing scary happened.  Later there were some scary moments like when his hand was caught in the window.  He also had to watch how other people died in the room.

Then the story turned scary and intriguing.  It was a little confusing but I think I understood all the subtleties.  There were a lot of twists and turns.  But as they say it was,”worth the price of admission.”
