Enchanted
Movie review of the 2007 film Enchanted – starring Patrick Dempsey, Amy Adams, James Marsden and Susan Sarandon.
Giselle is a fairytale princess. Literally. She is lovely, pretty and romantic. All the jungle creatures are her friends and they all adore this nice girl. She sings, in hope to be heard by “the one”. One day, her song is heard by Prince Edward. He is also lovely, pretty and romantic. Perfect match. He meets her and they fall in love. However before they can get married, the wicked witch Narissa (Edward’s stepmom) – yeah, every fairy tale has one- sends her to the real world. So about 10-11 minutes into the movie, with our princess thrown into the real world, the animated movie turns into a real one.
Giselle is all alone in the world- and in New York- of all places- , in a gorgeous wedding dress and without a clue.
Robert (Patrick Dempsey) is a single father. He is a divorce lawyer, a relationship with Nancy and favors practical over emotional when it comes to romance.
His cynical attitudes make him successful at his work but his kid daughter Morgan is not very happy with it. She wants to be read fairy tales and believe in them. So her luck changes for the better when they accidentally meet Giselle (Amy Adams). Morgan is happy that they have found an actual princess. Robert is not that pleased. He thinks they have met a lunatic. They have to let her into their home. She seems to have no money and moreover, she keeps talking about her prince Edward.
And she is not wrong to think that Edward will find her. He (James Marsden) follows her into the real world. So does Giselle best animal friend- the chipmunk. Of course Narissa (voice by Susan Sarandon) doesn’t accept this and sends her stupid but loyal (who also happens to be in love with Narissa) servant Nathaniel after them: Now we have four formerly cartoon characters walking around in the real world. Imagine the complications…
The story gets funnier and more romantic after this point. Edward is a pretty clueless, good-natured yet silly character. Giselle gets adapted as much as she can. She also realizes that this new world might be weird but it is certainly fun. She is feeling things that didn’t exist in her real world…such as attraction to a formerly cynical divorce lawyer. While Robert can’t decide whether Giselle is certifiable or just great, she starts to grow on him. And it won’t be long before he realizes that Giselle has been telling the truth about where she is from after all.
This movie has to be one of the most fun films ever. It has a uniquely entertaining blend of animation, romantic comedy, musical and well- straight out comedy. Edward’s self-perception and naive reactions are hilarious. The chipmunk Pip has to be the most entertaining “character” ever. As Pip realizes he can’t speak in the human world, he gets more and more resourceful in trying to protect Giselle from Nathaniel and Narissa’s evil plans. While the musical aspect is not dominant, there are very entertaining and amusing songs sung by our prince and princess.
The cast is great. When your fairy tale prince is played by James Marsden (and quite adorably), it takes Grey’s Anatomy’s McDreamy (Patrick Dempsey) to lure Giselle (Amy Adams). Oh, of course the movie has more barriers for Robert and Giselle than an actual romantic comedy: Narissa is out to kill Giselle. Edward wants his princess and wants to take her back. I did mention Robert has a girlfriend, right?
This 2007 film is perfect for all ages. Rated 7.5 on IMDB, voted by over 50.000 people. Try it out. You won’t regret it.
Below is a marvelous clip when Giselle starts singing in Central Park.
