Star Trek Movie Review

And No, I’m Not a Trekkie.

I hardly watched Star Trek when it was on T.V. And I mean from the first incarnation in the 60’s to the most recent television version “Star Trek: Enterprise”. I had only seen one of the Star Trek movies and really had no interest in Star Trek anything. So it’s pretty safe to say that I was in no way shape or form a Trekkie. And still this movie rocked.

Star Trek tells the story of a young Captain Kirk, Spock, and the other main players from the original T.V. Series. How they got to where they are and sometimes why they act the way they do. For someone who is not an expert in this area, it was nice to get a back story. And the back story begins with the opening scene.

The opening scene: The USS Kelvin is investigating a lightning storm in space but when the crew gets there they realize it’s a massive black hole. Then the fun begins. From this black hole a huge ship starts to emerge. This massive ship opens fire with advanced weaponry that the Kelvin has no protection from.

What a great opening scene. I don’t want to say anymore because I’ll give away spoilers but it was awesome. Not only was it a great opening because it jumped into the action right away, but it was also amazing because I cared so much about characters I had just met. 10 minutes ago. I have been to movies where half way through I could care less about what happens to a character. But this movie sucks you in early. And doesn’t let go till the end.

One of the other memorable scenes in Star Trek was the space jump from a ship, through earth’s atmosphere, down to a platform on an enormous drill. Intense to say the least. Then when they land on it they have to fight for there lives on the platform all the while trying to destroy it.

Star Trek also has a great comedic element to it. It’s a lot funnier than I thought it was going to be. Which helped make the movie not seem long at all. In fact it seemed to zip by. Especially when you add all the elements together: great story, great script, great directing, good acting, lots of action, compelling characters, and lots of fun. A recipe for a great summer movie.

JJ Abrams has himself a winner here. Not to mention he has set himself and the Star Trek franchise up for a great run at the movies. And in that case, we are all winners too.

So if your not familiar with the story, not a crazed obsessed fan, or not a big Sci Fi fan I say that doesn’t matter. Movies like these transcend their own genres. Star Trek is definitely a summer movie worth seeing.

What a great review. I am definitely a trekkie. But I didn’t think I would be interested in this film. Because “nobody” was in it. But after reading this. I am going to go ahead and see it. Thanks!

Action, great characters, and some humor. Sounds great. I am a Star Trek fan and have been looking forward to this movie. Now I want to see it even more.

Sorry, I got to disagree on thisone. I was looking to see this movie, since I saw the first trailer and I was really disapointed after seeing it. Please donĀ“t take me wrong. I still think the scenes you mentioned are great and probably it’s not really bad movie, but it is really bad star trek movie. I was very open to reboot of star trek, but Abrahms just completly destroyed the original “feeling” and atmosphere of star trek movies. Replecing too much of ST smart storylines with excessive action. The charcters were too shallow, the vilain too stupid and the overall feeling; “This is not a Star Trek movie!” I really think Abrahms could do much better and study the “good stuff” in original movies a bit more, before replacing it with too much action scenes. I have the feeling he just did not bother to really understand the ST phenomenon. Sad.

Rufus, you remind me of the excellent Onion clip on this movie:

“Trekkies Bash New Star Trek Film As ‘Fun, Watchable’ ”

One can have opinions on the reboot, on the villain character and on some of the antics, but overall it was indeed fun and watchable, and no more goofy than the Whales in Space movie (STIV).

If you never saw the other movies just think of what you missed! Surely you’d love a few of the best ones. I saw this movie too and enjoyed it, but it is not one of the best one.
