Star Trek: First Contact Review

“First Contact” is a deep space thriller that will warp your mind forever.

The Starship Enterprise, an intergalactic warp speed spaceship encounters its arch enemy, the Borg. The crew ends up going back in time in pursuit of the Borg. Will the crew overcome their challenges and save earth or fail and destroy the brotherhood of humanity?

“Star Trek First Contact” is a science fiction picture with plenty of action and characters. This film was directed by Jonathan Frakes. It was produced at Paramount Studios in 1996. It is rated PG-13. Some members of the cast include Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes who is also the director, Brent Spiner, LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, and Gates McFadden. Others include Mariana Sirtis, Alfre Woodward, and James Cromwell. This movie is about the crew of the Star Trek Enterprise going back in time to save earth from destruction by the enemy, the Borg. They must create first contact again to unite humans and aliens forever.

Captain Jean-Luc Piccard is the captain of the Enterprise; he was once captured by the Borg so he feels it necessary to give payback to his captors. Lilly is a human from the past and is taken up to the Enterprise. She is confused and wants to go back. Zefram Cochran is the great doctor who invented warp drive on space ships and made it possible to go faster than light. Without him there would never be first contact. But, once the crew meets him in person their impression of him changes totally. The Borg queen is the ruler of the Borg race. She commands all of the assimilated Borg drones. Data is a robot that is part of the crew. He wishes to be more human and tries to act like one.

I think a key idea in this movie is chasing the big prize. It is so important because all that the captain wants is to get revenge on the Borg. The movie refers to Moby Dick. Captain Ahab fixates his thoughts on one thing and one thing only, catching the white whale. He is fixated so much that he dies for it. With Captain Piccard, the same thing is happening; he wants to defeat the Borg so much that he is jeopardizing the lives of his crew for his own intentions. This theme is pounded home throughout the movie and is important to everything in the picture.

The lighting in this movie gave the scene a more realistic feel. It made the movie feel watchable. It really gets you into the movie. Also, the music is incredible. In the action scenes, the music was heart pounding and made you get into the moment. It was well chosen for the movie. I don’t think that the music and lighting selection could have been any better for the movie.

I recommend this movie to people who enjoy sci-fi movies with space battles and action packed mind boggling plots. This picture has some bad language but nothing to have a cow over. People from ages 16 and above would probably enjoy this movie because the plot was a bit too hard to follow for some people and it refers to some higher level reading material that young children might not understand. Also older people would enjoy this movie because many adults grew up watching “Star Trek.” I still would recommend “Star Wars” over star trek any day because star wars has a better laid out plot and is more action packed; also it is not lame and is hard to make fun of unlike “Star Trek”.
