First, let me make it very clear. The only knowledge I had of the Star Trek series were the names Kirk, Picard, Spock, and Enterprise. That is about it. Despite that, I immensely enjoyed this movie.
It starts with a very explosive scene (literally). The USS Kelvin is being attacked by a very powerful ship of unkown origin. The captain goes over to the other ship to try to negotiate a cease-fire. He places a young man named Kirk as captain. Thats all I can tell you. The rest, you will have to see. What I can tell you though, is that this is one of the best movies I have ever seen. With some memorable lines (Alert. Medical.), memorable locations (Vulcan), and some seriously strange casting that somehow worked (Harold. Like let’s go to White Castle Harold, as Sulu. What?), this movie simply works. Epic, funny, awesome, action-packed, great story that requires absolutely NO background (Although my dad, a major Trekkie, approves it with the original story and cast) to enjoy fully. Some parts made me laugh out loud, particularly the Kobayashi Maru test, and some parts were so awesome I literally was on the edge of my seat, like the skydive sequence.
Go see this movie in theatres. The DVD simply will not do it justice. While I didn’t see it in IMAX, I suggest springing the extra cash. It would be awesome.
