My brief was to investigate the genre conventions used in 1950’s sci fi. I examined numerous film posters in order to come to a conclusion on how conventions are used in sci fi. I then went on to deconstruct a fan site to demonstrate awareness of convergence. Many science fiction films in the 1950’s have portrayed humans as victimised. It was a time of uncertainty after war. Cold war politics (technological advancements) contributed to a feeling of paranoia about anything UN American. Creatures/aliens often a metaphor for communism and anything UN American creatures were like invaders of their comfortable American life idea of fear of the future probably the fear that nuclear technology would result in the destruction of the world’s movies. B movies were movies that played after the main movie but usually consisted of the same actors. These movies were low budget. Many people would watch the main movie and then walk out before watching the movie; this is somewhat the reasoning of trailers taking part before and not after a certain movie. Genres of B movies include western science fiction and horror. Sci fi films in the 1950’s were predominantly b movies. The poster demonstrates many different qualities suggesting to its genre, one of them being the use of red that connotates anger and blood.
