Movie Review of “Fountain”: Starring Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz.
Another unsophisticated review by an untamed Christian who loves great movies.
Warner Bros. Pictures and Regency Enterprises
Written and directed by Darren Aronofsky.
SciFi/Fantasy/Drama (officially but its really New Age BS)
Characters
Tomas/Tommy/Tom Creo: Hugh Jackman
Isabel/Izzi/Iz Creo: Rachel Weisz
Running Time
96 long minutes of my life that I want back.
Don’t see “The Fountain”.
I got dragged out to see this film against my better judgment. I should have listened to myself. The best thing about this film was the popcorn.
I haven’t seen Arnofsky’s other films “Pi” or “Requiem for a Dream” so I don’t know if they stink as bad as this film. If Melville, Dostoevsky, Charles Manson, and the Bahgwan Shri Rajneesh all sat down together to write over a pot of mushroom tea they might have written this but they’d have had the sense not to actually film it.
I almost never summarize a film plot but this time I couldn’t—there isn’t one. Hue should have turned this film down, like Brad Pitt and Russell Crowe did. Rachel Weis was already on probation with me after “The Constant Gardener,” which was a potentially good movie until the last 5 minutes. I’m going to have to through her in the bin with Dianne Keaton where I won’t see a film if she’s in it.
Imagine this film as a deck of cards where each card is a scene and each suit is a plot line. Sort all the heart cards out and throw them away. Now shuffle the three remaining suits together. Now imagine $70 million got cut from your budget (which it did). So you deal the deck into two piles. One pile you throw away and the other you film in sequence. Oh and every time the Ace of Spades comes up you put it back in the deck to be seen again.
What about the “PG-13” Rating?
The violence in this movie isn’t the kind that comes with great action scenes. It’s people dieing stupidly, and one guy whipping himself. There’s some husband and wife play that doesn’t really equate to much and some language.
Larger Story
Spoiler alert. This is a movie about turning yourself into a tree and launching yourself into a dieing star. It’s retarded. There is no larger story here. There is nothing the least bit redeeming about this film.

Wow, seems you don’t understand any larger story,
This was a visually stunning movie, with one fantastic story. Yes, wow, you are correct about one thing, it is about a husband and wife play, althouuuuuuuuuugh, it represents a larger deeper meaning about the different roles we play in life, circumstances, and meaning. the tree didn’t represent a tree, it represented the life we all hold, the organic being and never-ending life (i.e reincarnation) we hold. the star you ask? well, that represented enlightenment (i.e descending into nirvana). the ONLY mistake of this film was thinking the general public could understand the deeper meaning instead of seeing it as a movie about (and i quote)”turning yourself into a tree and launching yourself into a dieing star”. I find it immensely sad that you missed the meaning, because it was a worth while one.
I myself thought it was one of the most visually spectacular movies i have ever seen, as well as having a beautifully written meaning. I think its amazing the way in which such a complex idea was created and represented- a beautiful piece of art. I would sincerely recommend this movie to ANYONE.
I agree with Jay’s comment above. This film is deeply touching. Most people with any level of emotion will be touched by it- the visual artwork and acting is breath-taking.
Also, before you become such a self-acclaiming “Movie Critic”, you might want to learn how to spell. Or at least enable spell check..
I completely disagree on Rachel Weis, she was amazing in “The Constant Gardner” which was an epic movie, with a great plot line, and a good, moral message. You have no taste sir, and I find you very arrogant. I agree with Mazaa and Jay, Fountain was artfully done, a beautiful movie. Rachel Weis, and Hugh Jackman did an extremely good job.
Also, Id like to see you, write, direct or act. If it’s as bad as your writing here. I can imagine how horrible anything from your mind onto paper would be. Yuck.
This movie is simply brilliant!
Arguably to enjoy it one needs either some brain or some heart.
PG-13 means that people who did not develop past 13 y.o. cognitive level will be wasting their time and money on this movie — they likely lack both brain and heart.
Well thank you Jay for saying something in your critique of my critique. Mazaa, Shannie, and Vadym basically just said you can’t spell and you’re a poopoo head.
I admit I had a lot of fun making fun of this movie. It sucked and I want people not to waste their money on it–whether I can spell or not.
My chief complaint is that the movie had no plot and I notice that no one came up with one. I hear a lot of “visually stunning” and “allegorical,” but I’m not hearing a plot. Admit it, there’s more plot in a commercial. Bare in mind I loved Akira Kirisouwa’s “Dreams” and “What Dreams may Come.” Those were also visually stunning, but they had a point too. The Fountain didn’t.
y’all just need to stop squabbling..and go kiss your significant other..clearly..it’s a love story..whisper in her/his ear..i love you baby..forever.
