Movie Review: Alien VS. Predator Requiem
This is the latest installment in the Alien and Predator movie franchise and in my opinion one of the better ones.
It’s very difficult to try and meet the expectations of fans when one is dealing with a series like the Alien and Predator franchise. As we’ve seen with Star Wars and Matrix movies, sometimes the fans have expectations that are out of line with what can be accomplished. “AvP:R” isn’t any different, in that many fans are going to be disappointed in the movie because they expect something that is very difficult to do, but overall “AvP:R” is better than I thought it would be and much, much better than the first “AvP”.
This movie begins where the first one left off, we see a Predator lying in state at the back of a ship with his chest burst wide open. There are facehuggers loose on the ship along with the growing Predalien. The lone live Predator on the ship is unable to maintain control of the situation and is killed. The ship crashes on a lonely blue planet known as Earth.
A father and son are out hunting and see the ship crash and rush off to find the ship still smoking in the forest. Predictably, they leave the ship where it lies and go off to contact the local sheriff, but it turns out that the facehuggers survived the crash and implant both the father and the son with Aliens.
We also meet the other main characters early in the movie, the local sheriff, played by John Ortiz, and his old buddy Dallas who took a different path as a criminal. The female lead is Reiko Aylesworth as Kelly. Kelly is a female Army chopper pilot just back from the wars. And, as is almost always the case in Alien movies, we have the little girl, Molly, played by Ariel Gade. Dallas has a little brother, Ricky, played by Johnny Lewis.
This movie has a TON of homage to the original movies, but primarily plays to the title characters, especially the Aliens. Dallas, the hero of the film, is also the name of the captain in the original “Alien” movie, played by Tom Skerrit and there’s no question, down to the black wife beater style tank-top worn by the female lead, that Kelly is Ripley (Sigorney Weaver) reborn. I half expected the scared, but brave, little girl in the film, Molly, to pop off a comment like Newt (Rebecca Hinn) from “Aliens”, which is among the scariest ever delivered on film. “Mostly they come at night. Mostly.”
In general, the Alien parts of the film are pretty terrifying, but the first time the Predator (Wolf) drops into the screen with his invisible body armor and all you hear is the thunder of his landing from the theater speakers, it will shake you to the core. This is a bloody, shoot-em-up with all of the violence, language and gore intact. It is a competent rendering of the Alien and Predator war by the brothers Strause.
I liked it and if you’re into Aliens getting the crap kicked out of them by a single hunting Predator with humans merely incidentals in the conflict then this movie is for you. Don’t expect too much out of the dialog or the actors, this movie isn’t about that. It’s about showing the vicious conflict between the Aliens and the Predators and how we got in the middle. Consider it too be, along with the sub-standard “Alien vs. Predator”, a set up for much better movies in the future.

“Stupid”, “Boring”, “Dull”, “A huge let down” are the best ways to describe this next AVP movie. It basically boils down to no story at all – just Aliens and 1 dull predator going at it with dull action and that’s it. The last movie was great and renewed my interest in these AVP series and gave a history, meaning and purpose to these movies. In this movie, the predator was unskillful, slow and looked cumbersome and always trying to catch up to the aliens. It was hard to tell the difference between the two creatures as they both looked the same towards the end. Was that the alien or the predator? Too many confusing points to discuss. Why didn’t the predator go back to earth with more of his buddies? He receives a distress call while on his home planet but he goes back alone? That was stupid.
In the last movie, the predators leave earth with a massive ship. In this movie the ship was dinky, small and not at all like the last movie. The beginning parts with the alien creature was not even scary, it all seemed very rushed as the writers were trying to build up an alien army. The predator seemed to be trying to clean up the mess created by the aliens by evaporating the dead bodies with a special blue chemical. But then he goes and skins one of the police offers and hangs him upside down on a tree for all to see? What was he doing? If your into non-sensible content and just want action of any kind, this movie will serve fine. But if your looking a good sequel to the last great AVP movie, this one falls way short.
Have you ever read the books? The predators are a race of hunters. What do hunters do? Hunt the biggest and rarest game and collect them for bragging rights. He skinned one human because that was one of the trophies he would have took back. When we use to go elk hunting sometimes you’d shoot down an elk, tag it, hang it upside down so animals don’t mess with it and come back for it later. the blue stuff he poured was on things he wasn’t gonna keep an stuff he wanted covered up. The new predator wanted the hybrid’s head, a lil revenge , or he would settle for a glorious death. That’s the way of there race. I do agree with you in regards to the numerous predators that were on the different looking spaceship from the first avp. As for the characters in the story, they made great kill pigs. What can I say I’m simple to please : ) you say tomato I say tomahto, you might want to read Alien vs Predator Prey/hunter’s planet/ and/or Predator Concrete Jungle.
