Love is in the Air

A list of some of my favourite romantic tragedies, just in time for Valentine’s Day.

With Valentines Day rapidly approaching, I thought I would list my all time favourite romance movies that are sure to bring a tear to your eye! This is my pick of the ultimate tragic love stories, so if you have a partner, be sure to watch one of these with them this year, or even if you are alone, get the tissues out and enjoy!

1. Love story (1970, Hiller)

Simply a movie about people who fall in love. A beautifully made film and a pleasure to watch, it will definitely make you cry and best to watch while cuddling up to the one you love. Love means never having to say you’re sorry.

2. Ghost (1990, Zucker)

This is a film which has always been one of my favourites and has remained one of the films that has made me cry the most. It is a beautiful love story with a few laughs along the way, but it’s sure to make you cry at the end. This film will remind you how important that special person in your life is.

3. Titanic (1997, Cameron)

Titanic is a film that has quickly turned into a classic and a must-see romance. The story of Rose and Jack is one which has been enjoyed by people all over the world and one that has touched the hearts of all romantics. It’s another personal favourite and although my significant other is unlikely to want to watch this one with me, I hope you can fit this into your day as it is one which will remain a classic for most people.

4. Romeo and Juliet (1996, Luhrmann)

This is a masterful piece of writing by William Shakespeare, and the combination of innovative direction by Baz Luhrmann and the stunning good looks of Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes make this film as wonderful as it is. Everybody knows the story, but it can be enjoyed over and over again when told by Luhrmann.

5. Moulin Rouge (2001, Luhrmann)

What better film to watch than one that celebrates love through song? This is another romantic masterpiece by Baz Luhrmann and another which is likely to make you cry near the end. The acting by Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman is astounding and believable as these two lovers try to overcome all obstacles.

6. City of Angels (1998, Silberling)

Another favourite of mine. Meg Ryan is beautiful, stunning and brilliant in this movie that is sure to make you cry. It will touch your heart as the story of an angel who falls in love unfolds before your eyes. Nicholas Cage is also amazing as an angel and the song to the film is also beautiful, Iris, by the Goo Goo Dolls.

7. Forrest Gump (1994, Zemeckis)

Tom Hanks won a well deserved Oscar for his portrayal of Forrest Gump. However it isn’t just the romance in this movie that attracts an audience. It is also a powerful drama, a war movie, an adventure and a comedy. Something everyone can enjoy, with a beautiful romance sewn in.

8. Dangerous Liaisons (1988, Frears)

John Malchovich shows his brilliance in this movie as love turns him from a cruel and cold man to the kind of man every girl wants. Listen out for his speech near the end and I’m sure you’ll cry as much as I did.

9. Edward Scissorhands (1990, Burton)

Johnny Depp, possibly, at his most outrageous and weird. This is a beautiful story told by Tim Burton about a man with scissors for hands who falls in love with a beautiful girl. It’s a typical beauty and the beast storyline with a slightly more different ending.

10. Cold Mountain (2003, Minghella)

This is another tear jerker and another appearance by Nicole Kidman who is equally brilliant in Cold Mountain. This is one that can be enjoyed by everyone and it is a film which was beautifully made.
