I am a HUGE fan of musicals and Oliver! would have to be one of my favourite, however as far as turning musicals into movies is concerned, I believe that Oliver! is one of the best. It contains almost all of the songs of the original musical including hits such as:
‘Food, Glorious Food’
‘As Long As He Needs Me’
And many more. The movie is extremely good quality for the time and I think they got an extremely good cast. For those not familliar with the Charles Dickens Novel, the story follows a young boy named Oliver who was sent to a Workhouse because he is an orphan. Oliver gets sold to an undertaker, but then escapes when he is treated poorly and locked in the cellar. He meets a pickpocket nick-named “The Artful Dodger”, who takes Oliver to a man named Fagin, who takes care of a group of homeless boys and teachers them how to be pickpockets. It is there that Oliver meets Nancy, who used to work for Fagin when she was a girl, but now lives with the infamous Bill Sikes.
Bill Sikes thinks that Oliver has told the authorities about him, so he tries to kill him. Nancy, meanwhile, has grown to like Oliver and tries to stop Bill. However, Bill won’t be stopped and it ends up costing Nancy her life in one of the movie’s most emotional scenes.
The story is emphasized throughout the movie with song and dance and beautiful filming. The movie’s only downfall, I would say, is that it doesn’t contain all the songs from the original musical, but it doesn’t effect the movie that much. It is a must see for lovers of older films and musicals.
