Zombieland: The Apocalypse is Funnier Than You Think

Review of comedy/horror film "Zombieland" starring Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin.

“Zombieland” (2009) doesn’t waist time getting to the point. There’s no long narration explaining how the world fell apart, why people are eating each other or what exactly it means to be of the walking dead. From the start of the film, everyone is dead. Well almost everyone.

The narrator, known only as ‘Columbus,’ after Columbus, Ohio, fears he might be the last human on earth. He has survived the zombie infestation and is traveling across the country looking for other uncontaminated souls.

Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) explains that he has a set of rules that have helped him survive, what he calls, Zombieland through a series of comical examples. Though these illustrations are gory and unbelievable, they fit with films outrageous tone.

On his way to Columbus (the city), Columbus (the person) meets a man on his way to Tallahassee, Fla. Can you guess what he decides to call him?

Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) is a tough-talking, fast-shooting, zombie-mutilating machine. The rugged-adventurist is the exact opposite of Columbus’ mild-mannered, phobic, college-boy, but they decided to stick together for a while anyway.

The match up, though awkward, proves funny. Throw in a couple of con-girls and you’ve got a hilarious mismatched group.

Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin) are sisters who have also managed to avoid having their brains eaten. Thanks to just enough back story we learn that they’ve been conning people since before America turned to Zombieland and they get by just fine.

Since the story features only four characters– with the exception of a few introduced very briefly through the stories told by those four, a cameo by Billy Murray and flesh eating, soulless creatures– there is room for just the right amount of character development without sacrificing laughs.

The four eventually end up forming a familial bond, but if you are looking for a family comedy, stay away from “Zombieland”. However, if you are looking for blood, guts, foul language and dark humor, “Zombieland” has it all.
