The Healing – a Filipino Horror Movie
This is a review of the movie directed by Chito S. Roño.
It was a weekend night out at the movies with my husband and we were having a hard time choosing between “The Bourne Legacy” and “The Healing”. I was actually impressed with the preview of “The Healing” while watching television a few days ago and I told my husband that it has been a long time since we have watched a horror flick together, so we have decided to go for the horror movie instead of the action movie.
Although I have been let down by a few Filipino movies in my lifetime, I thought to myself that it would not hurt to give this one a try. It was a fact that when you see a preview of a Tagalog movie, you have seen the whole movie itself. However, this one is a rare gem. The special effects have come a long way from being mediocre to impressive. Yes, this movie is actually surprising regarding the storyline and the special effects. ***Spoiler Alert*** They did not skimp on blood and gore on this one, and people who are not used to gore will definitely be alarmed at how believable the scenes are in this movie.
With regards to acting, I can safely say that they did a great job of immersing the audience inside the story. I love a movie that has actors who act naturally and do not tend to go overboard with it. Somehow, this is a rare movie that I want to watch again and again. Also, it was fun seeing a pattern inside the movie, which I would not spoil for you. It was a certain trademark of the director for the whole movie itself and I hope I was not the only one who noticed it. My husband certainly did not until I told him about it.
Overall, I give this one a rating of 4 out of 5 stars. I am a huge horror fan and I actually like this flick. I do hope that the Philippine Cinema will pick up the pace after this movie.
