Their seems to be a lot of mystery surrounding “The Cabin In The Woods” so to preserve the mystery I will not say to much about the plot. Apart from it features the typical set up for a horror movie the sexy one, the jock, the thinker, the stoned one and the virgin. Things take a turn for the worst when they go to spend a weekend in an old cabin in the woods. When a group of redneck zombies are accidently summoned by reading from an old book. However all is not what it seems, this movie really turns the formulaic horror movies on their head.
So what was bad about this movie well for once it is hard to come up with something, I was not 100% happy with the ending. But then again this movie wanted to do things differently, so even though I was not happy with the last 2 minutes of the movie (I would have made a different choice) I can understand why it ended how it did.
Normally I would make a quick hack at some of the actors but again they where acting perfectly for the roles they where playing although Kristen Connolly could have preformed a little better in the movie as I really found it hard to connect with her.
Well as for the plus points by far the best thing was the script it was pitch perfect witty, clever and above all brilliant.
The acting was good, but by far the best acting coming from Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford who played by far the most interesting characters of the movie.
It was great to see that co writer Joss Whedon also threw in plenty of things to keep his long term fans happy with appearances from actors from both “Buffy” and “Angel” as well as one or two other non human cameos.
This movie will really give a much needed shot in the arm to horror movies and I think it will be incredibly difficult to find a horror movie this year that is as equally smart or witty. In fact I think it will be many years before anything equally brilliant comes along. This Movie is basically a game changer for horror like Scream was over 15 years ago.
If you are a horror fan go and see this movie this is the type of horror movie that you have wanted to see a true monster mash up. If horror is not your thing then give this movie a chance you might find it more entertaining then you expected.
I Give this movie a 9 out of 10
