Martyrs

I watched a DVD last night called the Martyrs, and I have to say it is one of the dumbest movies I have ever watched, and believe me when I tell you that I am a low budget horror buff also.

I can take the really good ones, but can also find an interesting aspect in some of the B rated ones.  Be it by gore, storyline, blood, or whatever it may be, I am usually one whom when my kids say it is no good, I can say, I kinda liked it.

But this one, it is was filmed by Pascal Laugier and  presented by Richard Grandpierre.  FEARNET.COM makes a comment on the front of the cover saying “One of the most ferocious horror films ever made”.  I don’t know what movie they were watching when they said this, cause I can assure you, I did not see it in this movie.

Sure there was some blood and a bit or torture in it, but the whole storyline made no sense, as it starts off that a girl name Lucie with blood covered all over her is running down a street, then is supposedly in an orphanage and she makes a friend named Anna.  Everyone wants to find out what happened to her as they feel she had been tortured, but she does not reveal anything to them.

It then hops to 15years later, showing her going into a house and killing the family of father, mother, daughter, and son.  Who knows why she does this at first, and then she calls her best friend Anna to tell her she killed them all.  It seemed that she was only suppose to make sure she knew who they were.  I guess they were suppose to be the ones who caught and tortured her as a child, although it does not show you how she found this out, or how she remembered this information sometime over the past 15 years.

Anna drives to meet up with her to see what she did, she ends up cleaning up the bloody mess that Lucie made, and almost trying to make out with her in the bathroom full of bloody bodies of the family.  I almost began to laugh at that point.

Lucie keeps talking about “Her”  that comes to beat her up and cut her up, which it never really shows till the middle of movie, and in reality, no one is actually there.  It hops around to where Lucie dies, Anna is caught by some strangers who come into the house, they lock her up in a hidden room downstairs, come down every few minutes to beat her up, peel her skin off, which they do not go into detail of showing it.  Really the only gore, was when she killed the family if you ask me.

Long story short, they torture Anna now, so that she can be at the stage of death, but not die, to supposedly witness the other world, and tell them what she sees?  Apparently they had been doing this to many people in hopes that one would live to tell them what they see.

A boss type lady that seems to be running the operation, talks to Anna, and next you know, with a house full of older people, whom they are suppose to share this secret with, the old women goes into the bathroom, puts a gun into her mouth and shoots herself.  And of course, you did not get to see any of that gore either.

I looked up the word MARTYRS in the dictionary, it was in the biblical times, suppose to mean “witness”, well, come on, what the heck did she see that made the lady kill herself.  Did she die after?  Did they continue on with things?  I have to say, this was one of the worst movies I have ever seen.  And I have seen some pretty bad ones.  I think Freddie Kruger in Nightmare On Elm Street, bugged me more then this movie ever could.  I asked myself, why did I finish watching it, well, I usually do, no matter how stupid or dumb I think they might be, cause I am hoping that something, somewhere, will pull the movie out of the toilet and bring it some life.  This one was really a let down.

So if you wanna waste some time, rent it, watch it, maybe you will be lucky and get some kind of thrill out of it.  Second thought, try to borrow from someone, don’t waste your hard earned money on it.
