Five Creepy Horror Movies Filmed In Canada
There’s nothing I like more then a good scary movie every now and then and unfortunately not many have come from Canada. I have done a little research and tried to find five of the most popular horror movies that were either made or filmed here in Canada. So if you like horror movies feel free to read on and see what famous classics and favorites where filmed here in Canada.
Prom Night – 1980

Now my opinion is the original Prom Night has to be one of the best horror flicks to ever come out of Canada. This movie was entirely filmed in and around Toronto and said to be a low budget horror film that was directed by Paul Lynch.
For those of you who have not seen this movie yet I’ll tell you a little bit about it. The movie starts in 1974 with four children playing hide and seek in an old, abandoned schoolhouse.
Basically what happens without ruining the movie is the children end up bullying one girl until she eventually falls to her death. All the children then claimed it was an accident and make a pack to never tell the truth and go on with their lives.
Six years later in 1980, the children that where responsible for the girls death are now in their late teens getting ready for prom. During the day before the prom each of the kids starts receiving weird phone calls but still go on like nothing is wrong, until later that night.
So basically in a nut shell the kids are going to pay for dishonesty and terrorizing on what’s suppose to be the happiest night of their lives.
For a low budget film at its time in 1980 it still managed to rake in somewhere around $14 million to 17 million worldwide and only cost a million and a half to make. To me it was pretty decent movie at the time and with actors like Jamie Lee Curtis and Leslie Nielsen you can’t go wrong.
American Psycho – 2000

Now American Psycho is another absolute favorite of mine and many other people. It’s kind of a disturbing movie but in my opinion well made.
The movie was loosely based off the book “American Psycho” written by Bret Easton Ellis in 1991, but the screenplay and director of the flick was Canadian Mary Harron. Also most of the movie was filmed in and around Toronto with only a few scenes shot in New York.
The basic plot of the movie is its set in 1987, a wealthy investment banking executive that has somewhat of a psycho alter ego that he hides from friends and co-workers has a hate on for the world that grows more and more intense and a hunger for murder.
It’s not your typical horror flick but never the less it’s still kind of freaky to think there could be possibly people out in the world similar to the lead character in this movie.
This movie had a budget of only seven million which in 2000 was not all that much but still had some good actors star in it like William Dafoe, Reese Witherspoon, Chloe Sevigny and of course the American Psycho himself, Christian Bale.
The film went on to be released in April 2000 and grossed almost 35 million worldwide which in my books is not to bad considering it only took 7 million to make.
If you have not seen this movie then I highly recommend checking it out but make SURE there are no kids around since this it contains quite a bit of sexual content and some pretty graphic murder scenes.
Black Christmas – Remake 2006

Now Black Christmas is the typical horror movie which most people forgot about or never heard of. It was originally made in 1974 but a remake was released on Christmas Day 2006 in America.
This movie was filmed in and around Vancouver, British Columbia and had a small budget of only $9 million which director Glen Morgan fully used on special effects. Also Glen Morgan had produced alternative endings to this movie which where all released in different countries.
For those of you who haven’t yet seen this film, the basic plot is about a girl’s sorority house on Christmas Eve. A couple of the girls decided to stay at the sorority house for Christmas and a escape mental patient escapes and decides to go on a murderous rampage at the house.
It was a pretty good horror flick overall but could have been a bit better. The movie did manage to gross $21 million worldwide but didn’t do as well as the producers and writers hoped for.
Godsend – 2004

In 2004, before the release of Godsend the hype on the movie was huge. Everyone thought once it was released it would be a sure hit with the public and why not? After all, the movie did have lead stars like Robert DeNiro, Greg Kinnear and Rebecca Romijn-Stamos.
They creators of the movie even ran a promotional site for the movie that was exactly like the clinic in the flick which claimed it could clone loved ones that have passed away. Some people actually believed this was true and eventually the website added it wasn’t real but just a promotional tool for the movie. The website is still up and running and can be found here at: http://www.godsendinstitute.org/
From the research I did I found that roughly this movie had a budget of $25 million but only bought in $30,114,487 gross worldwide. That’s pretty bad considering the time that it took to make it and all the money spent promoting the movie.
The entire movie was filmed around Ontario Canada and again director Nick Hamm thought it was a for sure hit and he even went as far to produce five different endings, but eventually he picked the tamest one to be released which might have made the movie worst.
Walled In – 2009

Walled In is a new horror/thriller movie scheduled for release March of this year. The entire movie was filmed in Regina, Saskatchewan with a budget of only $9 million. Director and screenplay writer Gilles Paquet-Brenner hopes this movie will be a hit and it’s sure to be.
The movie is based off a French best selling novel called “Les Emmures” and is basically about a demolition company agent that supervises the razing of a mysterious building which contains horrifying secrets and past inhabitants within its walls.
I personally can’t wait and in my opinion the movie seems to have a decent story behind it. Walled In once released will go straight to DVD so make sure to keep an eye out for this one.
So that’s my list of five but please keep mind we all have different opinions and differences but never the less all of the films do have one thing in common and that is they are all filmed here in Canada.
