2012 didn’t give me a good feeling about the current horror scene. Most of them are purely made for youngsters, others didn’t even had anything scary and some used to much CGI. But now and then some gems do pop up. Let me say that this came in my hands, never heard of it but what a great flick this is.
From shot one it had my full attention and I must say it was so until the last seconds, and the last seconds do end even after the end credits. It’s simple, this is old school horror. I won’t file it under slasher but comes close. The way it was filmed and edited did at the eighties feeling.
I have seen Stevan Mena’s first attempt Malevolence (2004) and it was one I liked. But he did improve so much, he even wrote the script.
What does make this flick a gem. First of all, it doesn’t use CGI to make some effects. Secondly, just when you think, omg, here comes the love part between the youngsters it moves further, downhill into a cruel flick. On the other hand the casting did made it also worth watching. It’s been a while since I have seen Michael Biehn in a recent horror but ere he is and he still do it properly. But what is also important is the killer especially in this flick were the killer is revealed from his first appearance. Brett Rickaby plays the killer and he did it very well. He was believable and really had something creepy over him. I can imagine that when a girl comes across this guy they are afraid. He was in The Crazies (2010) but here he was excellent. Also both thumbs up for a new scream queen, Alexandra Daddario who plays Allison, we will see her in Texas Chainsaw Masacre 3D coming out in 2012 but don’t forget the 12 year old (when it was shot) Spencer List. the way he turns into a depraved kid and the things he has to do really gives you goosebumps.
It’s brutal, scary and even a bit gory, the red stuff flows a lot even as sometimes the slaughtering is done off-screen. But what works is that the tortured ones do scream, and they scream a lot. Once they are hurt they kept screaming and that really does it job toward the horror. Nowadays in most new horrors people are badly hurt but after a few minutes they are running around like nothing happened.
