Twilight: The Weakest Blockbuster From Hollywood in 2008

I watched this film with great enthusiasm but found it miles short of my expectations.

‘Twilight’ didn’t make it to the Indian multiplexes and single screens. It is possible that the producers were reluctant to release a film having a ‘romantic vampire’ as a protagonist in a country where audience enjoy more gory vampire flicks like ‘Van Helsing’ and ‘underworld’ series.

Looking at the impressive box office collections of the film and huge popularity of Mrs. Stephanie Meyer’s novel series I decided to watch this film on DVD. 2 hours later I realized that I had watched the weakest Hollywood blockbuster of 2008.

Here I review this film by dividing it in 3 parts.

1. (First 35 minutes) The 1st part of the film is intriguing and thoroughly engaging. It was refreshing to watch the romantic side of a vampire, especially after being fed on gory vampire films for so long. Both Robert and Kristen as well as chemistry between them looks good.

2. (Next 30-35 minutes)  Here the film loses its energy. The fun and thrill is suddenly gone. The story hardly moves forward and many scenes are yawn inducing. The facts given about the vampires are cliched and nothing new is offered.

3. (Final part)
The antagonists come in picture now and you expect some thrills and chills. Here comes another disappointment. There is no out of box twist or turn in the script. Even the encounter between Edward and James is very short and non-imaginative.

The most irritating thing in the film is its main protagonist Bella. I have never found any main character so confusing ever in any film. Bella’s character is quite bizarre. Her inclination towards Edward despite his resisting her and then sometimes making distances from him looks so odd. Also her unapologetic behaviour towards her dad is very weird. I found this character very selfish and few reviews that I read of this series did make me believe firmly in my analysis of Bella.

Finally I can say that this movie did splendid business just due to its large fan base. Its sequel ‘New Moon’ will come at the year end and I am definitely not looking forward to it.
