Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

A review of the latest Harry Potter film.

Being the sixth film in the series, The Half Blood Prince has a lot to live up to. Its five predecessors were excellent films, usually getting better with time, so is number six the best one yet? In a lot of people’s opinions, no. Of course, in this film, the character’s are a lot older, so obviously there are going to be romances, but one paper described it as a ‘Romcom’.

Before we go too far, lets go over the story. It is, basically a continuation of the fifth film. It starts off with the Death-Eaters going around and kidnapping people, which worries the Ministry of Magic. Like a lot of the other films, the future of Hogwarts hangs in the balance. Once the story gets started, it soon emerges that Harry has become the ‘chosen one’. He is the only one who can defeat Voldemort. However, Draco Malfoy is also a ‘chosen one’, but for the other side. He has been chosen by Voldemort to perform a task, but what could this task be? I’m afraid you will have to find that out yourselves.

Like I said, Draco Malfoy has become the Dark Lord’s chosen one, which entails a bigger role for actor Tom Felton. However, it was made out that he had a huge role, being the equivelant of Harry. However, he has few lines and most of the scenes involve him standing there and thinking. Nevertheless, he does put on a good performance.

As for Harry, Ron and Hermione, though, not much has changed. Well, actually, a lot has changed. In my opinion, the character’s have changed too much. In the previous films, Ron was somewhat of a clumsy peson who had no luck getting a girlfriend. In this film, he has become a ladies man and all of a sudden, a star athlete! Harry has become cocky and arrogant, and Hermione’s grades are slipping. Yes, the characters are growing up, but they aren’t changing entirely.

So far I have only talked about the acting and the story. I haven’t actually said anything about the film. So here we go…

If i were to sum it up in one word, that word would be ’slow’. That’s right, it is a very slow film. For about half of the film the main plot is unclear. Lots of little sub-plots litter most of the film, making it confusing at times. Also, you have to wait for the very end to find out who the film’s namesake is!

Well, there’s my short review. To conclude, I am just going to say that this, sixth film, is a tedious way of linking the fifth and seventh films. It leaves you with no imagination as to what will happen. Don’t get me wrong, it is a good film, just not as good as those before it.
