Ten Movies for Children and Parents
Ten movies that you can put on for your kids that just may get your attention too.
- Shrek - There are three in the series now. All three get children’s attention because of the colors, the voices and the digitally created characters. Parents enjoy the subtle innuendo and jokes that are thrown in for them.
- Treasure Planet - My children love this twist on Robert Loius Stevenson’s Treasure Island. It takes place in space and follows Jim, a troubled boy looking for adventure. He gets the adventure of his life when he is teamed up with a cyborg named Silver!
- Cats and Dogs - Children love the live action characters. Adults get a few laughs from the jokes and will recognize some of the voices. The story has action and there’s a heart warming lesson about loyalty.
- Barbie of Swan Lake – It may sound a bit cheesy but little girls love to see Barbie in movies. Barbie is portrayed as a positive heroine and the children gain exposure to “Swan Lake”.
- Beethoven – Children love the antics of a St. Bernard crashing through the house. Parents are glad that there isn’t a St. Bernard crashing through their house!
- Wall E - I admit, I thought it’d be cheesy, but I got hauled in very quickly. There’s a bit of romance and intrigue on a vey innocent level. Wall E is endearing and you root for him the whole way. Made me reminisce for “Number 5″ and the movie “Short Circuit”.
- The Incredibles – Fast paced action with heart. What child hasn’t envisioned their parent as a super hero? These parents are retired Super Heroes who come out of retirement when “Civilian Life” threatens to bury them in monotony.
- Madagascar – An all star cast leads with the story of four animal friend who are sent away from a New York Zoo and find themselves lost in Madagascar. They meet up with a wild bunch of lemurs led by “King Julien” and help them face “The Foosa”!
- Fantasia 2000 – Children of all ages stop and stare. As they listen to classical and jazz selections, they are shown a story that emphasizes how the music could be interpreted. Adults like the music (Rhapsody in Blue my personal favorite) and can enjoy seeing “Guest Speakers” like Steve Martin, Bette Midler and Penn and Teller.
- Good Boy - A contemporary “Boy and his dog” story. The dog adopted by the boy is no ordinary dog. He’s from dog ruled planet of “Sirius” and he’s evaluating how well dogs are running Earth before “the Great Dane” decides to call all the dogs home.
