Paul Blart Protects the Peace and Entertains Audiences Everywhere

“Paul Blart: Mall Cop” exploded into theaters on Jan. 16 with not much going for it other than “a fun, family movie” with little to no plot development or entertaining qualities.

To everyone’s great surprise, Blart jumped to the top of the box office charts with a gross of $39,234,238 and still climbing. What part of Blart is so appealing to viewers that the previews did not credit?

“Mall Cop” is about the aspiring state trooper Paul Blart, who fails his physical test due to a rare blood sugar condition.

With no real substance or purpose in his career, he takes his mall cop persona very seriously, causing him to be disliked by nearly all of his coworkers. When his beloved mall is taken over by renegade terrorists, he is the only one who dares to save the mall and rescue the hostages.

“Mall Cop” really has nothing to stand on as far as script and plot are concerned. The writing is at times mediocre and tacky, like any family comedy these days.

The unrealistic takeover of the mall displays the film’s shallow-minded plot development and priority to not dazzle the audience.  The one anomaly in this motion picture that redeems it is star Kevin James, who is able to bring Paul Blart to life in a both humorous and relatable way. Without him the film would have undoubtedly sank to the bottom of the “failed movies” tank.

Another positive aspect of the movie was its costars. The heist of the mall is carried out by extreme skaters and bikers such as the famed Mike Valley who is featured in the Tony Hawk games and Rick Thorne who has been featured on MTV’s “Cribs”. Stars like these put on an interesting show with their stunts that are performed throughout the movie.

Although “Paul Blart: Mall Cop” has a shaky storyline, a somewhat juvenile script, and unrealistic scenarios, it also is a great comedy for not only kids, but adults too. Kevin James’s performance may not have been Oscar-worthy, but it will be remembered.
