Family-Friendly Television Shows and Movies
Lists movies and television shows that are family friendly and even Christian.
I know that we often worry about what kind of movies and television shows our children watch. Especially in this new age, where even children’s shows seem too adult. So here are some family and Christian oriented movies and shows to enjoy.
Shows:
Touched by an Angel is a show about angels who intervene in people’s lives. This show teaches a moral with every episode. Stars Roma Downey and Della Reese.
7th Heaven is also a television show about a Protestant minister and his family. This show also has morals in each episode and emphasizes family and family values. It stars Jessica Biel, Stephen Collins, and Katherine Hicks.
Little House on the Prairie- I still love this show. It also often has morals, and emphasizes family. The show doesn’t have any language, nudity, or strong adult situations to worry about. It stars Michael Landon and Melissa Gilbert.
Family Matters is a beloved show with it’s mascot Steve Urkel. The show is very funny and also teaches a moral or comes to a resolution. Family is also very important in the show. There is no cussing or nudity.
Saved by the Bell is another show that was popular around the Family Matters time. It is about a group of friends in high school dealing with love and life. The show often had morals at the end of the episodes and is funny. There is no nudity, bad language, or violence.
I Love Lucy is a show that you are probably familiar with but I do not want you to rule this out. I think that the comedy of Lucy will reign beyond our grand children’s time.
Many older shows are a safe bet. There were many more provisions on what could be on the air. There wasn’t nudity, cursing, or a lot of violence.This includes The Brady Bunch, The Partridge Family,and Mama’s Family.
Movies:
The Love Comes Softly series is one of my favorite Christian series of movies. They are based off of Janet Oakes books and are directed by Michael Landon Jr. The first two movies of the series star Katherine Heigl. They are set back in the prairie days and have very Christian resolutions and themes.
One Night with the King is about the story of Esther. It is very good.
The Santa Clause stars the very funny Tim Allen and follows the story of man who inherits Santa Claus’s position. It’s a very good family movie, especially around Christmas.
A Walk to Remember is a story about a troubled boy who falls in loves with a Christian girl and ends up changing his life. This is a good one for preteens and teens.
The Prince of Egypt is a movie about Moses.
Tuck Everlasting is a good family movie based off the book with the same title. It is also good for preteen and teens. It is about a girl who meets a family who can live forever.
Narnia is based off of the second C.S. Lewis book in this series-the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. It has strong Christian undertones.
Harry and the Hendersons is a comedy that follows a family who finds Big Foot. It stars John Lithgow and is a good clean family film.
Beethoven is a movie about a family who gets a dog who is at times out of control. It stars Charles Grodin and Bonnie Hunt. IT is very funny and family friendly.
Honey I Shrunk the Kids and Honey I Blew Up the Kid are both great family films starring Rick Moranis. It is a comedy and a clean film.
It Takes Two stars Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen and Kristie Alley. It is a prince and the popper meets Freaky Friday kind of film with two girls who try to fix up two people. One is an orphan and the other is rich. It is a funny family film.
For Richer or Poorer is a good movie for older children (preteens and teens). It is about a troubled married couple who flea from their rich lives and end up hiding out with the Amish. It is a funny film with a great moral. It stars Kristie Alley and Tim Allen.
High School Musical films are from Disney and are a big hit right now. They do not have any nudity, cursing, or violence.
Older Disney movies are a safe bet. Tyler Perry movies are good for teens. They are a little more mature which is why I suggest them for teens but they offer Christian undertones and solutions. Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen’s older movies are very family friendly. Please feel free to comment on any movies you feel should be added to the list.
