DVD Review: Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008)

Now available on DVD is this year’s remake of Jules Verne’s classic “Journey to the Center of the Earth”. Accessible in both 2D and 3D, the latter version comes complete with four 3D glasses. I saw this movie at a cinema in 3D, and I think this format is the best way to watch.

Although it strays significantly from Verne’s novel, the screenplay by Michael Weiss, Jennifer Flackett and Mark Levin is tighter and more action-packed than the 1960 film version. Rated PG, this “Journey to the Center of the Earth” is family-friendly so it is fine for the kids to watch.

Brendan Fraser, Josh Hutcherson, Anita Briem, and Seth Meyers head the cast. Fraser and Hutcherson are excellent; in fact, I wish the former would make more action-adventure movies. I have always thought that he was the heir-apparent to Harrison Ford in this genre. Given his flare for comedy, Brendan Fraser appeals greatly to fans of exciting, escapist fun.

Of course, the visuals are what make a movie like this. Chuck Shuman’s 3D cinematography greatly enhances Christopher Townsend’s visual effects. Director Eric Brevig deftly puts it all together.

The entire family will love “Journey to the Center of the Earth”.
