Romeo and Juliet: Comparing Both Films
Romeo and Juliet is a classic love story and has been made into many films. This is a comparison of two made by Baz Luhrmann and Franco Zefferelli.
One day the Capulets decided to have a party and everyone was invited apart from the montagues whom were their worst enemies. However Mercutio, Benvolio Montague, Romeo Montague and some others went to the party in disguise. Careless Romeo took his mask off and Tybalt recognized him and was enraged. After the party Tybalt went looking for Romeo and found Mercutio instead. Romeo came and Tybalt wanted to fight him but instead he fought Mercutio. Mercutio was killed under Romeos arm while Romeo got in the way to try and stop them fighting. Romeo was angry so he chased down Tybalt and killed him realizing too late that this was the wrong thing to do.
In Baz Luhrmanns version Tybalt is a very violent fighter and he attacks Romeo badly. He fights to kill and him and the Capulets are Hispanic and dress in black. He is very careless as in the first scene of fighting he drops a lighted match. He is very good with a gun as in the first scene he shoots a Montague who is in a moving car and he has two guns.
In Franco Zefferellis version he enjoys seeing Montagues in pain as he stabs one in the eye and laughs evilly. In this version he fights with mercutio as if it is a game and he is not fighting for the kill. Romeo fights with Tybalt with a sword and kills him but regrets it afterwards.
In Luhrmanns version Tybalt wants to hurt Romeo a lot whereas in Zefferellis version he just wants to show him who’s boss. In both of the versions Tybalt is good with a sword/gun and he doesn’t mean to kill Mercutio. In both of the versions Tybalt is known as the prince of cats and he is evil.
