Riding in Cars with Boys

A review on the movie “Riding In Cars With Boys”. Included is a synopsis of the story and what I thought of it. Also there is a cast list.

‘Riding in Cars with Boys’ is based on a true story by Beverly D’Onofrio. The movie was made in 2001 and was produced by James L. Brooks.

The cast was played by:

  • Drew Barrymore as Bev
  • Mika Boorem as Bev, age 11
  • Steve Zahn as Ray
  • Adam Garcia as Jason
  • Maggie Gyllenhaal as Amelia
  • Logan Lerman as Jason, age 8
  • Brittany Murphy as Faye
  • James Woods as Bev’s father
  • Lorraine Bracco as Bev’s mother

The movie is about a girl wanting to be a famous writer but one thing stands in her way. Her son.

Bev is a teenage girl who has a dream to become a famous writer. She has been working on a book called ‘Riding in Cars with Boys’ which gets published. After being humiliated in front of her dream boyfriend, she accidentally falls pregnant with Ray in the back of her friend’s car.

Bev has now had the baby. The baby turns out to be a boy which later in the movie is named Jason. Bev at first denies having this baby because she planned that Bev and Faye were going to both have girls. She had no choice though. She had to accept the baby. While Ray was playing with Jason, Bev just lied there, crying.

It gets worse. Bev is studying to become a famous writer but the studying becomes chaos as she has to take care of Jason as well as get her work finished on time. If she doesn’t, her dream career is gone. Bev also found out that changing a baby’s diaper is no picnic after being darted with pee smack bang in the face. As Bev is brushing her tongue and teeth, Bev’s mum holds Jason laughing at Bev.

Things are looking grim for Bev and Ray. After being sent out of the house, Jason is left alone with Amelia. Bev’s father, who is a police officer, pulls up next to Jason and Jason tells them that Bev and Ray are doing weed in the house, hence the reason why he got sent out. Bev is then arrested for handling illicit drugs and the money they were going to use to move away had been seized by police. Bev was furious! After Bev’s book was published, she (with Jason) went to Ray’s house to ask him a favor. In order to be able to put her book on the shelves in shops, he had to sign a permission form saying that they could because it had information about him being a drug addict and doing weed and other criminal offences. Ray’s new girlfriend ordered him not to sign so they left the house, as they were walking to their car, Ray walked out of the house, pretending to take the garbage out. He gave Jason a hug and slipped the permission form, which he had signed, into Jason’s pocket. The book gets put out on the shelves and Bev gives some money to Jason to get him to where Amelia lives so they are together and Bev decides to stay where she is…for now.

I think the movie was a good movie; I enjoyed the part when she had to change Jason’s diaper and Jason pees in Bev’s face. That was my favorite part. I would probably watch it again if I had the chance to. It was also good because it was a true story with bits of humor crammed into the plot.
