Reflections on the Slumdog Millionaire Poop Incident

Jumping on a mud pool of poop just to get an autograph from his favorite singer is something that many of us may deem imaginable. But for Jamal Malik, the main character in the recent 2008 Academy Award winning film Slumdog Millionaire, getting himself submerged in a pool of waste and feces is the ultimate sacrifice he had to take for a dream come true – his favorite celebrity’s signature!

Personally, I’ve never seen any film (or any film maker for that matter) possess the audacity to present the reality of defecation in such a blunt manner on screen. The closest we can ever compare to this incident is the prison escape scene from “The Shawshank Redemption”, but that was many, many years ago (1994). Andy Dufresne, an innocent man who got thirty years jail time, finally implemented his long planned prison escape, and had to travel hundreds of yards through the prison’s septic system to do it. For some reason, poop has a way of strengthening the intensity of any film. You see, seeing a main character escape from prison is nothing new to any experienced movie watcher. But if the prisoner needed to make his way through a septic tank filled with “turtle poke”, it’s a much more convincing story!

But let’s get back to the Slumdog Millionaire. For those of you reading this who might not had the chance to watch the film yet, please don’t think that it is a film about gross and disgusting themes alone. This article is not written to repel your appetite. In all aspects, The Slumdog Millionaire is a breakthrough film that will both entertain and move you in many ways. It now stands as one of best ever done in the film industry, effectively mirroring the rich culture of India and the realities of living there.
