Movie Review: The Lovely Bones
Just released in theaters today, January 15th.
The Lovely Bones is taken from the book by the same title, written by Alice Sebold. The movie is produced by Steven Spielberg, which in itself tells the viewer that the storyline must be a strong one for Spielberg to have even considered taking on the venture. As in the book, the movie is narrated by the dead teenage girl, Susie Salmon, “you know, like the fish.”

The story is disturbing in the fact that it deals with the death of an innocent child, however Spielberg chooses not to dwell on the blood and gore of murder. Rather he is quite effective with his use of mystery and “bumps in the night” technique. There are also some nice fantasy scenes of what Heaven looks like to Susie.
This is one story where I can honestly say I liked the movie more than the book. The movie has a slightly different twist on its ending and the characters are portrayed much more likable than they were in the book. I am glad to have read the book first, as I don’t think I would have read the book after having seen the movie. It deals with mourning and grief, as well as murder, and makes for a rather depressing story overall. The movie is rated PG-13 with good reason. I doubt that my sixteen year old would enjoy this movie; in actuality, I am not sure it is a movie to be “enjoyed”, in the normal sense of the word, by anyone. That being said, I must add that Spielberg does another superb job in his production of this movie.

I have heard that this is a great movie… and it is an award-winning movie also…
I read the book first and loved both that and the movie.
Thank you for commenting!
Thanks for the review. I think I want to see this one.
we all have different perspective, likeas and dislikes about movies. you are right in your opinion.
Appreciate your comments…and that is correct, this is merely my own perspective.
Great review! I want to see this now. Have no desire to read the book, however.
Steven Spielberg is a good director. I think this is a good movie to watch.
Great review! I have the book and have been putting off reading it because I’ve heard it’s pretty creepy. The movie sounds good though. I think I’ll go see it eventually. Thanks for sharing!
Just wanted to point out to cobaltinee, and anyone else who was under that mistaken impression, Steven Spielberg was NOT the director, and had little input into the compilation of the movie. It was directed by Peter Jackson, who was also the director of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and it was animated fabulously by Weta Workshop, also of LOTR fame.
That being pointed out, I liked your honest review. I actually preferred the book to the movie, but I thought Peter Jackson did the book justice, and I doubt another director could have done portrayed such themes as tastefully.
interesting movie, i too would like to read the book first.
Good movie, I though it was creepy. weird but I give maybe 8 1/2 or 9 on scale one to ten.
ok, i’m just gonna continue reading the book and then seen the movie, thanks for your review
Nice review, and the movie is another Spilberg work. If anybody asks me for a good movie review I’ll refer to this post.
I’ve never run across the book but have heard of the movie… I’m not allowed to see it because the family I live with believes that anything dealing with anything dead will bring evil spirits or demons into the house. But it did seem like it would be an interesting movie.
nice article, I haven’t seen the movie but would like to read the book.
Nice review. Better i watch the movie
Good one. The review is so nicely put. Though I have not read about this before.
Watch my Texts, Im sure you will enjoy, Alot.
Just take a look, coment rate. :b
Love
This movie was produced by Peter Jackson, not Spielberg.
Thanks for the review.
I read the book. If you think the movie is better/different, then I guess I better go see it. Thanks.
You liked the movie better than the book. Thats a first.
I head about the review of this book from the Catholic Devotional. It teaches about not holding grudges to your enemies.
I also did a review of this movie. I only saw the trailer though. I thought you might have mentioned the drama of the murder and the view of the victim from Heaven. Nice review though
The movie was produced by one and directed by the other; both Jackson and Spielberg were necessary components to the successful outcome of the movie.
Thanks again for such wonderful comments.
Keep em coming!
