The beginning starts off with RTLM playing which is a radio station that is a Hutu radio station. The radio says how the Tutsi’s are cockroaches. The Hutu’s are the majority and Tutsi’s are the minority, but the Tutsi’s once ruled the government. Paul Rusesabagina, who is Hutu, and his wife Tatiana, who is Tutsi live with there 3 children. Paul is a manager of Mille Collines, which is where most rich travelers go to. The president signs a peace treaty and the country is calming down, because a civil war between the Tutsis and the Hutus was heating up. Paul visits Paul before this and noticed all the war items he stored up. Paul has to go there to buy items for the hotel. After this the President is shot down by the Hutu’s and everyone is now more scared than ever.
Riots break outside on the streets and many are slaughtered. Paul’s family is rescued when the riots happened, but when the soldiers figure out that the families are all cockroaches they want to kill them all, but Paul bribes all them out. He takes them all to the Hotel Mille Collines. While the genocide is going on the only place that is safe and protected by the UN is the hotel. Paul is left when the owner leaves for safety and Paul is left in charge. More and more refugees come into the hotel and the hotel ends up with over 800 people. Oliver is the UN guard that protects them, but he has to leave in disgust. He told Paul that the other nations think that your trash and worthless. Paul needs to stall time and get attention to from other nations so he tells the people to call all people they know. The plan worked and a small portion of the people taken out by the UN.
The people are ambushed because of a hotel worker traitor that told the Interhamwe. Oliver turns the car around and goes back to the Hotel Mille Collines. General Augustine doesn’t want to go back to the hotel, but Paul is cunning and blackmails him by telling him that no one will believe him when he is tried as a war criminal. General wants to shoot him, but Paul tells him that he is the only one that can save him. He goes back to the hotel and sees that the Hutu’s are already there. He remembers telling if the Hutus came to jump off the roof, but they didn’t. They reach the refugee camp and look for Tatiana’s nieces, but can’t find them. They start to leave, but Pat saw a kid from the hotel and runs to find them and tell them that her nieces where here. They all unite and the movie ends like that.
