I misread the ad today for the start time of the movie ‘W’, so my brother and I got there after it started, I hate that but we did not miss much.
Without a doubt Josh Brolin will get a resounding oscar nomination and he should also receive the best actor award hands down. I know the oscar race has just begun but for now Josh Brolin is a shoe in. As the movie goes on he really does look like our ‘leader’ George Bush.
Oliver Stone let Mr. Bush off easy. He did not show him as a bumbling idiot that we are used to seeing on the news or on David Letterman’s Show, where he does his usual nightly Great Presidential Speeches; on the contrary, Mr. Stone showed us the black sheep of a family where his father, Bush Sr. or as he is known in the movie ‘Poppy’, looked out for his son and did all that he could for him. He got him jobs, he got him into both Yale and Harvard but still he did not excel in anything that he was involved in. In the meantime George Jr. had to deal with the hatred that he had toward his father, because his father admired his brother Jeb more because he was focused and more serious than George Jr.
Coming away from this movie I liked it, but after it was all said and done and over with we all sat there and just took it in, and began to discuss the movie. The performances were well done with a superb cast, if I had not seen it I’m not sure how long it would have taken me to realize that Stacy Keach is in there playing the part of a well respected minister. After looking at Thandie Newton playing Condoleeza Rice, it makes me wonder if she really does sound like that and if she really does hold her head to the side as often as was depicted in the movie.
I am not an Oliver Stone fan and I never will be, but he is a brilliant film maker and this one will definitely be part of my growing DVD collection.
There it is as it is as I just wrote it, right now, today.
