Movie Review: Madea Goes to Jail

This is a review of Tyler Perry’s (2009) PG-13 movie, “Madea Goes To Jail”.

“Madea Goes To Jail” is one of the many movies in the Tyler Perry collection. It stars Tyler Perry, Derek Luke, Keshia Knight Pulliam, Ion Overman, Sofia Vergara, and Vanessa Ferlito.

After a high speed chase on the freeway, Madea is sentenced to anger management classes. Of course, she fails to keep her cool when a woman takes her parking spot at the local Kmart. Madea goes psycho outside the store as the lady tries to shop. The lady notices that Madea has totaled her little red car and comes out screaming. She tells Madea that her husband is a lawyer and she is going to pay. Madea makes a run for it. Back at home, it takes drastic police force to bring Madea to justice. She is sentenced to five years of hard time behind bars.

Serving her time, she stirs up some trouble for  the other inmates. She puts them in their place and makes some friends along the way. One of her friends is a young woman prostitute who’s lawyer (Madea’s lawyer) helped put her away, all because she was jealous of the prostitute having so much to do with her fiancee. They just happened to be childhood friends and he was trying to help her with her drug addiction.

One of the female lawyer’s coworkers finds out about what she has done and tells her soon to be husband that she padded the case to help put his friend away. So, as they are about to say their I do’s- he doesn’t, and leaves her at the alter to go get the woman he is really in love with, his childhood friend.

His ex-fiancee is then thrown into the public eye, and her other court cases are questionable. This sets Madea free.

I found this Tyler Perry movie to be very funny, but not as funny as the other movies he has made about Madea before it. I didn’t like the emphasis they put on the drug use by Madea’s brother, nor did I like the fact that her brother’s facial make-up was a disaster. He did not look real, like he did in the other Madea movies. To me it seemed too short and not what I would expect of Tyler Perry. I would recommend that you rent this movie because it is funny, but don’t waste your hard earned $20.00 to buy it.
