Why Avatar Was a Complete Rip From Pocahontas
Avatar wasn’t unique at all, in fact, change a few names and you’ve got the story for Pocahontas…not Avatar.
Avatar
Alright, lets quickly recap the story of Pocahontas. Pocahontas was a native woman living in what the settlers called “the new world“. Of course when the settlers came, they immediately saw the value of the new world because of its gold mines. Pocahontas meets settler John Smith, and she initially despises him.
Eventually John and Pocahontas spend more and more time together, and John finds that Pocahontas’ father is the chief of the native tribe, and that Pocahontas is set to marry a successful warrior whom she doesn’t really love. Pocahontas requests help from “grandmother willow” who tells her that she loves John and that he’s a good man.
The settlers plan to attack the natives for gold, and John is sentenced to death by the natives. However soon John is found to be good, and Pocahontas saves him while the leader of the settlers is killed and the two parties come to good terms.
If this still doesn’t sound familiar, read this bit about Avatar.
Neytiri was a native alien living in what we called “space“. When we arrived, we immediately saw the value of “space” because of the Unobtanium present. Neytiri meets Avatar John Sully, and initially wants to kill him.
The Tree of Souls signals to Neytiri that Jake is actually peaceful, and that she shouldn’t kill him. Jake finds that Neytiri is the tribe leader’s daughter, and that she is sentenced to marry the strongest tribal warrior.
The humans plan to attack the aliens for their Unobtainium, and immediately Avatar Jake Sully is blamed because of his human background. Worst comes to worst, and the humans begin their attack, however Jake is saved by Neytiri from death, and he helps kill the human military leader. Eventually the military is sent back to earth, and few humans stay and keep peace with the aliens in space.
The formula that director James Cameron used must have looked something like this.
- Pocahontas=Neytiri,
- John Smith=Jake Sully,
- Newcomers=Bad,
- Grandmother Willow=Tree of Souls,
- Gold=Unobtanium.
Now considering that Avatar was the most successful film in the history of humanity, with a worldwide profit of US $1,843,201,268, its interesting to see that the movie had NO CREATIVITY WHATSOEVER, and proves that people just don’t seem to be able to spot a scam when they see one, even if its on the biggest IMAX 3D screen in America for 6 weeks.

This is exactly my opinion of Avatar: a sci-fi version of Pocahontas with incredible visual effects. It is a good movie in the way it has been designed and directed, but other than a lame cliche plot it has nothing else to offer.
Nice article, but try not to over-exaggerate. E.g: “Now considering that Avatar was the most successful film
in the history of humanity”. Film as an art has been around for just over a century, so for the greater part of human existence Films were something impossible to create. I know this seems like I’m picking on your words, and I’m sorry about that, but it just struck me as a bit silly.
Comment very much appreciated!
Yes, i guess now that i think about it you’re right, the greater part of human existence didn’t have the ability to make films.
And don’t worry about “picking” my words, i find that criticism is always for the better, and i always try to learn from comments such as these.
thanks!
