Who Watches the Watchmen?
My review of the popular trade paperback comic, which came to life in movie form.
Wow! What else can I say? The movie is two hours and forty five minutes long and all of it is absolute eye candy. The openning montage seen is the best openning to a movie in recent memory. Having not read the comic, I was delighted to find out that they kept to the story relatively closely, even incorporating lines from the comic into the movie.
Before I go on, I want to say this. This movie is rated “R” and for a reason, if you do not want your child to see extreme violence, a lot of nudity, and even some very graphic sex scenes DO NOT TAKE THEM TO SEE IT. There were several people who went into this movie with younger children expecting a superhero movie in the traditional sense of the X-men or Spiderman. That is not what this movie is. Those people left about halfway through when it became clear that the “R” rating was well deserved.
This movie is a commentary on the world and the corruption in it. It is set in the 1980s, but not as we know them, but rather in an alternate reality where Nixon was elected to three terms. Even through this is not your traditional superhero movie it is still a superhero movie. There are colorful characters with realistic backstories and an actual reason as to why they are vigilates. The alternate take on the world and the great cinematography pulls it all together.
My rating is 4.8 out of 5. There are a few scenes where the story seems to chug along, and you start to feel the length of the movie at the 2hr 30min mark, but other than that still a must see for anyone who wants to see gritty action, or anyone who was a fan of the comic.
