What Was In That Pipe Of Sherlock Holmes?

Did you ever wonder?

This is the age old question.  Did you know?  It is thought that Sherlock’s pipe held a substance that aided him in his detective work.  That was why he was so successful as a a sleuth.  I would rather believe he was such an incredible sleuth that he could solve any conundrum.  To this end, I defend the honor of Sir Sherlock Holmes.

Holmes was my favorite mystery writer.  His clever way of deducing clues and puffing on that pipe in that “Oh, this is such an easy case” way he had about him!  Sometimes, the cases wouldn’t be easy and I’d worry he wouldn’t be able to solve.  In the end, however, his wit and tenacity always prevailed!

Now I am well into adulthood and although I enjoy watching Sherlock mysteries on TV, or reading books about Holmes, I realize that he was very clever but he was no Stephen Hawking.  Now, there is a mastermind!  However, I still enjoy the cunning of Holmes.

Movie Review: The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes

The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes, 1970, directed by Billy Wilder, starring Robert Stephens, Genevieve Page, Colin Blakely, and Christopher Lee was the best movie I could find on the net one night. Although I don’t usually enjoy comedy, I was pleasantly surprised by the movie.

Sherlock Holmes: A Tribute

We all visit castles, forts, palaces, museums to learn about the history and the people who helped make that history. But have you ever come across an incidence where the person in question never really existed, but still you find signs of his existence everywhere? He is a fiction more real than reality.

Sherlock Holmes circa 2009 starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law is a fantastic film. Holmes is a character who has, throughout literary and cinema history, been reinvented. Some reviewers have exposed themselves as far too precious in regards to the authentic Sherlock Holmes. The great thing about Pop Culture is the ability to individualise your own experiences across the creative spectrum. I think Downey’s Holmes is an insightful and enjoyable generation of character. Much like his Charles Chaplin he is comes to life as the experiences and moments mount.

Critique:  As far as I can ascertain, as long as I can remember, there has been much debate as to the contents of the ever-present pipe Sherlock dangles from his mouth.  There has been some speculation that it was a special tobacco cultivated just for Sherlock Holmes.  Others have implied he used it only as a prop, dangling from his mouth.  Still others insist it held “special” tobacco which, when inhaled, gave him great insight into solving his cases!

I am not going to comment on this topic.  Needless to say, Sherlock Holmes seems to have proven himself in our history and I leave further speculation for the historians.
