Upcoming Film Festivals 2011

The upcoming film festivals for 2011 will draw the cream of the crop of local and international cinema.

Film festivals contain diverse elements, focused around film. For example, a film festival may treat lovers of soundtracks and music by hosting bands in film music events.

The purpose of a film festival is to showcase films, some of which may be controversial or political in nature, such as ‘The Shock Doctrine’, a film which looks at how governments and big business exploit moments of crisis in vulnerable countries. Attendees at the festival have the benefit of being able to discuss the film with the people involved in making it.

 

Sundance Film Festival 2011

The Sundance film festival 2010 was tagged as ‘Cinematic Rebellion’. Of over 6,000 submissions received from 21 countries in the short film category, only 81 short films have been selected to play at the 2011 Sundance film festival.

Sundance film festival 2011 is being held in park City, Utah from January 20th to January 30th, 2011.

Slamdance Film Festival 2011

The Slamdance Film Festival aims to nurture, support and showcase truly independent films. The Slamdance Film Festival will be held between January 21st and January 27th, 2011. The film festival aims to develop new independent artists and their cinematic vision.

Spokane International Film Festival 2011

The Spokane International Film Festival showcases world-class features, documentaries and short films. The filmmakers and actors involved in the films are usually present at the festival to give their anecdotes on the production of the film and answer questions from the audience. The Spokane Film Festival will take place from February 3rd to February 13th, 2011.

Native American Film and Video Festival 2011

The Native American Film and Video Festival is the first international indigenous film festival founded to celebrate Native Americans in film. The film festival showcases documentaries, experimental media and feature films. The Native American Film and Video Festival will be held from March 31st to April 3rd, 2011.

Edinburgh International Film Festival 2011

The Edinburgh International Film Festival 2011 will be held from June 15th to June 26th, 2011. Which films will receive awards in 2011? In 2010, the award for best new British feature film went to Nick Whitfield’s ‘Skeletons’.

Cannes Film Festival

The Cannes Film Festival, or Festival de Cannes, will be held from May 11th to May 22nd, 2011. This festival was supposed to start in 1939 in Cannes but was put off due to the war. In 1946, the festival took place for the first time. In 1955, the signature award, the Palme d’Or was created.
