Tron Legacy: The Concept Art Looks a Bit Like Blade Runner
Let it be a success to inspire a generation like the first.
When the Tron Legacy teaser trailer was released, I was drawn in by the Light-cycle shooting across the screen in partial HD glory. Zooming across a landscape that makes the old Tron film look rubbish (but as a marvellous feat of cinematic glory none the less), but the world of an empty computer world being over seen by the main character of the original film Kevin Flynn. He stood as a bearded man of a true mystery, and to be frank, the mystery was perfect as questions began to blossom in my MCP controlled mind. Was that a new Clu in the yellow? Has Kevin Flynn turned evil? Is the trailer a canon situation to the new film? What has become of Tron himself? What was the man in blue talking about?
A whole world of question that might be the surface of many more, but something about the trailer lacked something along the lines of the world of Tron itself—one point I could see a city skyline in the distance, then a bridge and a hint of thunder near the beginning of the trailer. The thunder is actually part of why the title has “Blade Runner” because of the concept artwork that has found its way onto YouTube as photos taken at Comic-Con 09. One image has the connotations of a Blade Runner kind of street with someone holding an umbrella, another is walking across the street itself and its raining—actually the rain is what reminded me of the whole Blade Runner feel along with a image of that strange red vessel from the film going through a very Blade Runner kind of city (sound effects running in sync with the images, really gives the video that extra kick). A fantastic way of entwining two great films together; what else could a lover of films ask for?
A decent adaption of a video-game, Uwe Boll being banned from making films throughout the universe (and using that damn German tax loophole), that they never made DragonBall Evolution and….I think that’s it….no wait! And for someone to adapt Ulysses 31 into an epic live-action film starring Liam Neeson.
The concept art present in the film, shows off everything from the old Tron film—only updated for this new (a second generation Light-cycles with a realistic appearance followed by a fifth generation Light-cycle *drool*) film. Beautiful epic-ness has been invested into this film and that’s what makes it a great thing to exist in this day and age—this can’t be for the money (20 or so years is too long to call it a cash-in sequel) but what it seems to be, is something to honour and introduce another generation to limitless possibility of storytelling. Heck! A world of cinema is still changing and this film represents the progress since the original Tron.
