Top Ten Movies of All Time by Genre

Movies here were decided based on their overall rating, popularity, and net gross.

The whole idea of having a top 10 list of movies is really silly because to be honest for me it would be hard to narrow it to top 50 let alone top 10.  But every one loves lists.  And my son, the movie buff,  is no exception. So this is his list of top 10 best movies of all time by genre.

Drama – The Godfather (1972): The aging patriarch of an organized crime dynasty transfers control of his clandestine empire to his reluctant son.

Action/Adventure – The Dark Knight (2008): Batman, Gordon and Harvey Dent are forced to deal with the chaos unleashed by an anarchist mastermind known only as the Joker, as he drives each of them to their limits.

Fantasy – Lord of The Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001): In a small village in the Shire a young Hobbit named Frodo has been entrusted with an ancient Ring. Now he must embark on an Epic quest to the Cracks of Doom in order to destroy it.

Horror – Psycho (1960): A young woman steals $40,000 from her employer’s client, and subsequently encounters a young motel proprietor too long under the domination of his mother.

Comedy – Dr. Strangelove or: How  I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964): An insane general starts a process to nuclear holocaust that a war room of politicians and generals frantically try to stop. 

Musical – Singin’ In The Rain (1952): A silent film production company and cast make a difficult transition to sound. 

Suspense – Jaws (1975): When a gigantic great white shark begins to menace the small island community of Amity, a police chief, a marine scientist and grizzled fisherman set out to stop it.

Western – High Noon (1952): A marshall, personally compelled to face a returning deadly enemy, finds that his own town refuses to help him. 

Romance – Gone With The Wind (1939): American classic in which a manipulative woman and a roguish man carry on a turbulent love affair in the American south during the Civil War and Reconstruction. 

Sci-Fi – Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977): Luke Skywalker leaves his home planet, teams up with other rebels, and tries to save Princess Leia from the evil clutches of Darth Vader.
