Top Five Movies From the 80s for Generation X

As a younger Generation X member, I still remember movies that, for various raisons, I haven’t seen in while. Some of these movies are still in my private collection and I never hesitate to buy a new edition.

Here is my personal Top 5 :

Footloose

Don’t miss the remake in 2010!

(1984) by Paramount. Footloose is a musical drama that tells the story of Ren McCormack (Kevin Bacon, 26 at the time) a teenager from Chicago who moves into a small town where the municipality had banned dances and rock music. With his classmates, they will find a way to have a senior prom with music and dancing, convincing the municipality and Reverend Shaw Moore (John Lithgrow), who blames the influence of rock music for the death of his beloved son.

Not forgetting the music, I bought the soundtrack first as a tape cassette, then as a CD and I then bought the file on iTunes too.

Breakfast Club

(1985) by Universal. The Breakfast Club is a comedy/drama that tells the story of five teenagers coming from different walk of life, on a Saturday morning during detention. Starring the beautiful Molly Ringwald, Judd Nelson, Emilio Estevez, Paul Gleason, Ally Sheedy and Anthony Michael Hall.

Flashdance

(1983) by Paramount. Flashdance. I can still hear the music when Alex is training. The storyline goes as follows : Alexandra Owens (played by Jennifer Beals) is a dancer at night and a wielder during the day. She will, despite obstacles, fall in love with Nick Hurley, played by Michael Nouri and achieve her dreams of dancing by passing an audition with the Conservatory. Cute romantic comedy with great music.

St-Elmo’s Fire

(1985) by.Columbia. The plot of the movie is simple but touched million of people. It is the story of seven graduates that are struggling with adulthood. It might not be a new storyline, but the actors that played the seven friends made the movie. Demi Moore, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Andrew McCarthy, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, Mare Winningham and Andie McDowell

My last choice might come as a surprise, but I couldn’t pass the occasion to put A Christmas Story on my list. I loved that movie and I still watch it every year at Christmas. Anybody remembers the lamp-leg ?

A Christmas Story

(1983) by MGM. A young boy, Ralphie Parker (played by Peter Billingsley), wants nothing more than a BB gun for Christmas. We also follow his story with the school bully, with his younger brother and with his parents. Hilarious moments of the movie : when Ralphie’s friend Stick gets his tongue stuck on a pole, the pink bunny costume, the F dash dash dash word, the lamp-leg and many more.

Of course, there are much more movies that I could have chosen but those are the one that I loved to see. Here is a list of the Top 10 movies from the 80’s, by the Box Office $ and calculated accordingly to the value of the dollar at that time (the 80’s):
