Top Five Movie Endings

We are usually disappointed by the endings, aren’t we? They are usually too typical and ordinary. You want to be caught off-guard. Here are five movies that did the trick for me.

Some movies are entirely good, some end badly and some just become even more popular due their impressive endings. Do not read if you consider every little detail as a spoiler. However I’m not going to tell you how it ends.

These are my Top 5:

1) The Devil’s Advocate (1997)

The movie stars Keanu, Reeves, Al Pacino and Charlize Theron. If you do not like supernatural elements you may not like it because “The Devil” is not a matter of speech.

A young, successful lawyer Kevin Lomax (Keanu Reeves) is happily married to Mary Ann (Charlize Theron) and his life is good. One day he wins a case, one that maybe he shouldn’t have won – justicewise. He is proposed to work for Al Pacino’s character John and this just sounds great. Great office. Amazing lifestyle and lovely paychecks. But soon terifying things start happening, his wife seems like losing her mind…As it turns out, his boss is actually Lucifer.

Wonderful thriller. Great Acting. Imagine Al Pacino’s skills with the character he is playing. And no- I will not tell you how it ends or what happens. The movie is just simple brilliance.

2) Butterfly On a Wheel (2007)

Not nearly as well-known as the other 4 movies but it is definitely worth watching. It features Maria Bello, Gerard Butler and Pierce Brosnan.

It is a thriller drama about a how a happily married couple’s- Neil and Abby- (Gerard Butler and Maria Bello) lives turn into hell when one day a man they don’t know (Pierce Brosnan) shocks them in their car. His partner has the daughter and unless the couple does exactly as he says, the kid will die. They have no idea how to handle the situation since they man’s motives are unclear and his demands do not make any sense

3) Memento (2000)

Memento is better then both The Devil’s Advocate and Butterfly on a Wheel on many aspects, especially originality. The movie’s story is told backwards and you have to pay very close attention. In fact, I strongly recommend to watch Memento more than once. It is written & directed by Christopher Nolan who directed the latest two Batman movies with Christian Bale. You might consider Batman movies a success or a disappointment. I kind of belong to the latter. Nolan really has a hard time to catch up with himself after this one.

Leonard (Guy Pearce) has short- term memory loss and this really makes his quest very tricky: His wife has been murdered and he is out to get the guy who did it. He has notes and tattoos and he has worked out a system yet still who can he trust? Who is who? Don’t worry, it is tricky for the audience too because the story is told in reverse. But then there are flashbacks that are told in line. So shall I say I love Memento’s beginning?

4) The Man from Earth (2007)

This movie has the least action, the smallest budget and the collection of the most unknown actors –compared to the other 4. Still, it has a smart, original story line and even though the movie basically has one location (inside and outside of one house), the storytelling just grips you.

John Oldman (David Lee Smith) is a young and accomplished professor in his mid 30s. He feels like he should move on from his current university so his friends want to throw him a goodbye party at his own place. Bit by bit we are given clues that John might be hiding something. He seems hesitant on whether or not to tell his friends. When he does start his story, his friends are fascinated. It seems like John has written a solid sci-fi story. He is claiming that he is one of the first men- ever! John has a valid answer for every question and he seems way too sane for a man to be claiming such a thing: that what he is saying is not a story. He is about 14.000 -years- old. He has stopped aging at about 35 so he needs to change identities every 10 years not to get noticed. Does he have a wild imagination? Mental problems? Or is he telling the truth and about to shake every scientific foundation?

It is incredibly gripping, never boring and twists are just brilliant. I love the ending too. I wish I could write like this.

5) The Sixth Sense (1999)

I know, typical. But I love the ending much more than I like the movie. I think it makes the movie. A kid (Haley Joel Osment) can “see dead people”. How many comic sketches and movies has that line inspired? Well, a psychologist (Bruce Willis) is trying to help him out.

I need not say more. The ending rocks but the movie could have a better paste.

you so should!!! they are great, thought provoking and pretty exciting.
I also noticed I should make another 5 list and complete it into a top 10 list. Seven has an amazing ending. Now come to think of it, it is so much more mind-blowing than The Sixth Sense!!!!

Well, I remembered a couple of other great endings, so a sequel is on the way!! ; )

P.S. I’ll make sure to add The Usual Suspects. That list is going to be so Kevin Spacey dominated. You’ll see what I mean ; )

I’m going to have to look up Buttefly on a Wheel and Man from Earth. I rarely get time these days to watch all the films I’d like to.

Enjoyed this very much Zoey, thank you. I like the style of your writing, very factual and down to earth, not too much humour and not too much personal opinion. A good mix that comes across well.
