Top 10 Movies of 2008

2008 was hardly a stellar year in the movies, but which movie rose above the others to be in the top 10?

With the economy slumping the way it has and gas prices going sky-high, I am surprised that people even went to movies last year. I went to one movie the whole year, but it was fantastic and knowing how I felt after that movie tells me why people go to them even when broke. For one or more hours, you get to be blown away by all the effects, writing and star power one can handle.

Without further delay, here is the list; is your favorite on there?

  1. WALL-E
  2. Synecdoche, New York
  3. My Winnipeg
  4. 4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days
  5. Milk
  6. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
  7. Slumdog Millionaire
  8. Iron Man
  9. Speed Racer
  10. Encounters at the End of the World

Last year movies were not that great, none of them made huge splashes. They had great ticket sales, but how many of these were good enough to buy the DVD once it was released? The one movie I saw last year, Elizabeth, is not even close to being in the top 10, despite rave reviews and a stellar cast. Did I buy the DVD? No, I did not and that because of how much those things cost. DVDs cost more than the ticket and you can watch movies free online. Why buy it when you can watch it free, right?

Which brings me to another question; does watching a movie online free affect the end of the year ratings, for this chart for instance? Did some of the movies in the top 10 get there just because people who were going where watching these and people who stayed home or waited to rent the DVD watched something else?
