Ticket sales at the box office were down 25 percent from last year around this time, but one did manage to make a lot of money. There’s a new movie at the box office during the weekend of (1/14/11 – 1/16/11). The rest of the top 10 movies at the box office didn’t compare to the number one movie.
The number one movie at the box office was The Green Hornet. It made $40 million since its debut at the box office. This is a live-action superhero comedy. It is the highest grossing debut ever for a superhero comedy. This comedy stars Seth Rogan. This is his biggest hit since 2008 Pineapple Express. He had flops since then so he needed this movie to be a hit. This isn’t a movie that I would rush to see unless I am told that it’s a good one.
The other new release at the box office was The Dilemma. The Dilemma came in at number two with over $21 million. This is a comedy starring Vince Vaughn and Kevin James. This is about a man who doesn’t know if he should tell his best friend that his wife is cheating on him. This sounds like it could be a pretty good movie, but I guess others didn’t think so. The movie hasn’t really been promoted the way it should because you can’t really tell what it is about from the trailer. This was a low debut for Vince Vaughn and Kevin James. Their other movies have done better than The Dilemma.
Last week’s number one movie True Grit slipped to number three with over $13 million. The movie has made over $128 million since its debut. This movie is getting a lot of Oscar buzz. I haven’t seen the original version so I probably won’t see this movie.
Rounding out the top five are The King’s Speech and Black Swan. The King’s Speech came in at number four with over $11 million. Black Swan came in at number five with over $10 million. I didn’t think either of these movies would do as well as they did. The King’s Speech has made over $46 million since its debut and Black Swan has made over $75 million since its debut.
Here are the top 10 movies at the box office:
1 *The Green Hornet – 40 million
2 *The Dilemma – 21.1 million
3 True Grit – 13.1 million
4 The King’s Speech – 11.2 million
