Enjoying Tokyo Godfathers is a journey filled with heart. Honestly, I cry almost every time I watch it (though in Animax, the film is almost always rotated each year). Tokyo Godfathers is the 3rd movie Satoshi Kon, who directed and wrote himself (with Keiko Nabumoto) in 2003. This film following the success of Perfect Blue (1997) and Millennium Actress (2002) are no less amazing.

For now, I will only tell you about my comedy that has become one of my favorite movies.
Tokyo Godfathers inspired by the movie “The 3 Godfathers (1948) which tells the story of three men who tried to rescue a baby from his mother who almost died. Tokyo Godfather more or less departs from the same idea. On Christmas Eve, three homeless people find a baby in a garbage dump. Is Gin, a former gambler who left home because of debt at the gambling table, and Hana, a cheerful transgender, and Miyuki who ran away from home because of an argument with her father. Hana armed with a desire to return the baby who later was named the baby Kiyoko, they crossed the city of Tokyo and brought them to many spectacular events. What makes this film so moving is the events and that connecting them with their respective past and the reality of the original parents of Kiyoko.
Unlike the two previous films, or Paprika that came out in 2006, Tokyo Godfathers talked with more simple way. Comedy that is displayed in it is able not only to tickle laugh but also touch the heart. Tokyo Godfathers tells the story by sharp and natural dialogues. The interaction of the three main characters makes us aware of the many things forgotten and stuck in our so-busy-routines. They told us there are more important things than our own small lives. Back to the tagline of this movie, the meaning of a family was questioned many times. How then Miyuki ‘by chance’ had to struggle with why she ran away from home and Gin’s ‘by chance’ meeting with his son who was also named Kiyoko. A sentence that was brought up at the beginning of the movie by Hana “A child is better with her own mother.”, in the end has to be deflected by herself when he met Sachiko, the person they are looking for.
The power of this movie is its characterizations of the characters that is depicted so good and kept me interested in the madness of what else will they do next. Oh, you will immediately fall in love with this three funny people. The main soundtrack Ode to Joy, somehow add splendor to this film because a suitable placement throughout the film.
In the end, all these ‘by chance’ series of events, has formed a film that is incredibly beautiful to be enjoyed with the whole family (I happened to watch with my brother and sister). For lovers of animated films, movie drama, comedy, family film, or adventure film, I obviously would always recommend this movie. With its simplicity, Tokyo Godfathers has become a complete film that fills our hearts with its warmth. (Prisanti Putri)
