So…..I was watching a review of the James Cameron film “Avatar” and I can say right off the bat that even though I had no intention of seeing it anyway, the review I saw made me want to see it even less. While based on previews and reviews I have seen I give it props for visual effects that is about all I can give it props for.
One commentator has stated “probably the most over rated movie ever.”
If Cam’s intent was artistic expression and to secure his place as a special effects genius, his goal was likely achieved due to the groundbreaking cinematic effects. As for substance over-all though there is little to speak of, and I could tell that WITHOUT even paying to go see the whole film.
(Yes I call him Cam on purpose, I know readers will say “but his name is James”….you’ve all heard of nicknames I’m sure. )
The tagline of the film is: Look into the face of terror.
So, why do I give the film a bad review? A combination of reasons…not the least of which is gore.
Anyway…In cultures passed, the idea of mirrors stealing souls was popular. That, it seems…is the basis for the film.
We know however that mirrors cannot steal one’s soul. My main reason for writing this piece is to say use some discernment when choosing what films you see.
Oliver Stone’s The Doors
So I have always loved film, as my readers who have been around a while know. Today I have a question for the fans. Are there any films you would suggest I see & review? I am seeking new ideas for the blog and lately I haven’t seen many good films. I saw Oliver Stone’s LSD inspired biopic about Jim Morrison & all I could do was feel sorry for the man. I actively discourage drug use of any kind, for the record. Anyway, let me get back to the review.
Morrison was portrayed as a drunken, womanizing, drug fiend of a fool. NOT the way Morrison wanted to be remembered I’m sure. It would often seem people are remembered more for their sins than they are for their successes.
While the man was admittedly gifted, he did squander the gift. What he might have been had he not squandered it all is an eternal mystery now.
