The Movie That Was Banned in 23 States
This movie was a sensation that opened in 1972 and brought out feminists who wanted it banned.
It was was “the dirty movie” that everybody and his brother talked about. Film maker,Gerald Damiano made this film for only $25 thousand. It was an instant hit and brought in over $600 million. I didn’t see the movie but I read the book. It was hot and steamy, not many books like this were on the market.and everyone had to have it. They were hidden away in underwear drawers and top closet shelves all across the country.

The movie opened in 1972 and was the first “porno chic” that guys took their dates to see. When it was playing at a theatre everyone was there to see and be seen. It was the sophisticated and daring thing to do. Feminists were infuriated and marched in front of many theatres where the film being shown. They managed to get the movie banned in 23 states.Which of course made everyone even more determined to see it.

The film was made in a Miami motel room about a woman with a misplaced sexual organ that made her crave oral sex. “Deep Throat” caused the male lead, Harry Reems to be prosecuted by the Feds and turned Linda Loveless into a star. It was also the nickname of the Water Gate whistle blower, and it brought porn out of the closet. Gerald Damiano didn’t plan for his little film to bring on a fight about sex and culture in America. He only had a film he wanted to produce. In fact he never dreamed it would make much more than production cost. Damiano was a former hairdresser who died last year at 80. He didn’t get any of the millions the movie brought in. Instead it went to the mobsters who financed it.

Ruby I heard of this years ago I never saw it or read the book but I do know there was a lot of controversy over it. Great Article well writting and presented.
Think Linda claimed they made her do this movie with a gun to her head.
I never seen it either. I do remember hearing about. Interesting!
I haven’t heard of this one. I would think by today’s standards it would probably be thought quite tame. A good review.

Me too, I’ve never seen these movies before.
Interesting article, I remember all the news and hype about it.
I remember the scandal fairly well. I was pretty busy with other things when it came out, so didn’t read the book or see the movie. Some interesting points here of which I was not aware.
Interesting. I didn’t know this.
Maybe if people were not so uptight about their sexuality it wouldnt have been such a big hit.
I have never seen any of this except for the hoopla it caused then. But it is very interesting how he created such a hit and didn’t get to share in the rewards.
Thanks, Ruby. Always interested in hearing stories behind the movies. I did not see this movie, but certainly am familiar with it’s place in history.
I saw the movie in 1976 at some seedy all night theater in Denver. It was still quite popular on the adult movie circuit. It is also interesting when a film is banned or attracts a lot of hoopla how popular it becomes later. If there hadn’t been all that hoopla, it would have just been another skin flick.
Well-written and interesting to read.
It’s nice to read such history recalls. Informative and interesting.
Never heard of it – - interesting article*
Blessings.
Sincerely,

Interesting article Ruby, I knew of it but none of the history behind it, it’s certainly a renowned film even today.

Great Article. I definitely remember all the noise about Deep Throat, the other one I didn’t hear much about. Thanks for sharing
Thanks everyone for your interest and your support. It was a long time ago and if the movie came out now it wouldn’t raise an eyebrow but we were a little more innocent then.Times have changed that’s for sure.
wow tnx i didnt know that
i didnt know any of that… I feel bad for that guy..he didnt’ get any money from that movie. Must have been something to watch especially if it got the feminists riled up!
Great review of this movie, I havent seen it, nor even heard of it, but thats very intersting about the whole thing,

Interesting bit of “nostalgia” unusual topic. Well done.
