The Four Movies That Scarred My Childhood
We’ve all seen these types of movies. Supposed children films that we’ll never forget… no matter how hard we try. Movies that were supposed to be fun and nice, but turned out to be too disturbing for our innocent, little minds.
Was it a teen movie that exposed you to a bizarre behavior? A freaky character that still pops up in your nightmares? Whatever the scene or situation was, there are the top four flicks that just shouldn’t be considered children’s movies.

The Goonies
With this cast of characters, it seemed perfect for adolescent. I mean, it did have both the Corey’s. But let us not forget who else was in this movie… specifically a crazy old woman and some sort of Cyclops. Throw in a scene where the kids will fall to their deaths of they don’t hit the right musical notes, and there’s a movie I cannot watch again without reliving the scary thoughts it gave me as a child.
Fantasia
Yes, I’m talking about a Mickey Mouse movie. But c’mon. The broom army? It couldn’t be stopped! For a cartoon, this movie sure freaked me out, and gave me another reason to avoid cleaning the kitchen.
Wizard of Oz
We’re talking serious death here. I mean, it was so secret the Wicked Witch was going for Dorothy’s jugular. And monkeys may be fun and cute, but all bets are off when they’re flying through the air with spooky music playing. And you can kill a crotchety old woman with just water? This could really mess with a young child’s mind.
Willy Wanka & the Chocolate Factory
Where to begin on this one? That boat sequence was super freaky. But it was those horrible consequences those bratty kids suffered that really stuck with me. As a kid, I didn’t quite have the sophistication to realize cool special effects that turned you blue or shrunk you down to Barbie-size was just a movie trick.
Depending on the age you saw these films, you memories may be less disturbed by these films. Maybe your unlikely scary childhood movie was Dumbo or the Neverending Story. Feel free to share. I’m sure you’re not alone.

good one..
There was only one Corey in the Goonies. Although I admit on the badly drawn poster it looks like Corey Haim, it isn’t… and my seven-year-old had no problem with it.
Brooms? Really?
Wizard of Oz? Try Wizard of Oz 2 with the Hall of witches heads that suddenly all wake up – far scarier.
The old Willy Wonka film was so far away from the real story I never felt anything other than annoyed when watching it. The new one wandered off plot too. They don’t seem to be able to resist messing with Roald Dahl’s perfectly written stories. Matilda was the worst example but as they changed the sticky end most of the characters met, I suspect they were trying to dumb down the scare factor so maybe you’re a fan of that one. The thing about the books was, you forgave the macabre endings because true justice had been served. And the kids that read these books went out into the world with a sense that truly strange things could happen so best behaviour was advised. The trouble with ‘Disney’ endings is that no child ever learned anything from them.
Having said that, the one that gave me nightmares? It could only be Cruella Deville in 101 Dalmations. (The original cartoon version, of course.) Although Labyrinth left me quite uneasy too.
