The Best Movie Musicals to Watch for Halloween

Halloween movies don’t have to be just horror films. There are fantastic musicals that are appropriate for Halloween too.

There are tons of Halloween movies, ranging from children’s TV specials to horror films.  Some of the most entertaining Halloween movies are actually musicals.  So this October celebrate Halloween by renting one of these movies, getting some Halloween candy or popcorn, and getting comfortable on your sofa.

Here are the best Halloween musicals.

The Nightmare Before Christmas

This animated Tim Burton creation is a bizarre and wonderful Halloween treat.  The story is about the pumpkin king, Jack Skellington, who feels like there should be more to life than just preparing for Halloween and scaring people.  He stumbles upon Christmas, and tries to bring the idea back with him…however the inhabitants of Halloween land completely misunderstand Christmas, and turn it into another Halloween.  The music is fantastic and incredibly catchy, so don’t be surprised if you walk around afterwards singing, “This is Halloween, everybody scream.”

Don’t be misled by the fact that this movie is animated.  The Nightmare Before Christmas is not really a children’s movie, animation was just the best way to express the unique vision and story of this particular movie.  I wouldn’t let small children watch this movie as they will find it too scary, but teenagers and adults love it. This movie has developed a real cult following over the years since it’s release.

Sweeney Todd

Sweeney Todd is another of Tim Burton’s creations, and although it is live action rather than animation, it has the same distinctive Burton style as The Nightmare Before Christmas and his other films.  Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter star in this film adaptation of the Broadway musical based on the true story of “the demon barber of Fleet Street.”  Sweeney Todd, a barber with a major chip on his shoulder, works in London.  People get more than they bargain for in his shop, though, and instead of just a shave they get their throats slit.  This mixture of musical theatre and blood-and-guts horror makes a truly entertaining Halloween watch.

Moulin Rouge

Moulin Rouge is not normally associated with Halloween.  However, I’ve included it in this list because it is a musical full of drama and fantastic costumes.  For a great Halloween evening, watch Moulin Rouge with friends and make it a fancy-dress event.  Make everyone dress up like a character from Moulin Rouge, and have your own wild holiday party a la the bohemian children of the revolution.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Obviously this list would not be complete without including this one.  This cult classic usually has midnight showings on Halloween in a lot of cities around the world, or is available on dvd.  Transvestites, music, young rock stars, and more.

At Halloween, most people would just head to the horror section of their Blockbuster and grab something like the Halloween series.  However, for a unique Halloween, this year try going for a musical.  They’re a lot of fun and sometimes just as appropriate for Halloween.
