Movies about the end of the world are often based around pure fiction and imagination. Knowing, however, has themes and symbolism that are related to actual real world things. The movie can definitely have a strong Christian theme when it is closely analyzed. There are also aspects of the movie that could be associated with the end of the world, the Apocalypse, and 2012 theories. The movie “Knowing” is uses the symbolism of a tree, black rocks, and numbers to symbolize Christianity and the end of the world.
The first piece of symbolism that becomes apparent in this movie is the numbers that predict tragic events. Each number in the list signifies a time, and a place, and a number of people that will be killed in a tragic event. The numbers were added to the movie to add a sense of mystery. Once there meaning is uncovered, it acts as a source of suspense, and adds feeling of impending doom to the story line. Besides their direct contribution to the story, the list of numbers have a symbolic meaning. The numbers may represent parts of the Bible, such as 2 Peter 3:10 for example, which talk about tragic events to happen in the future. The passage reads “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up“. The numbers could be seen as a divine warning of the end of the world, just like this passage. The list of numbers could also be tied into the Mayan Calendar, The Book of Change, or Web-Bot. All of these sources mysteriously contain lists of events which mysteriously end in 2012. The fact that the numbers in the movie have a finite ending, which signifies the end of the world could in fact also be a reference to any one of these things. The numbers, however, most likely represent the Prophecies of Nostradamus, which predicted many tragic and catastrophic events long before they took place. These events include the reign of Hilter, and the attack on September 11th, 2001. The numbers in the movie act as a similar prophecy, predicting events such as a terrible plane crash, and a subway accident, both of which kill hundreds of people. And just like Nostradamus’ prophecies, the numbers have one final prediction, the end of the world. There are many other uses of symbolism throughout the movie Knowing, however. The list of numbers is only one of many.
Another form of symbolism that is present in the movie “Knowing”, is the black rocks. It would make most sense that the black rocks represent death. This is something that a viewer may catch on to, in which case the rocks also become a source of foreshadowing, to a character’s death. Black is commonly a color that symbolizes death and evil. The mother is holding on to a black rock when she is taken into the ambulance after she is killed in a car accident. Another reason to believe that they symbolize death is the fact that there were millions of them on the ground right at the end of the movie, before the two children are taken away. At the end of the movie the earth is hit by a solar flare, which basically puts humanity into extinction. It would definitely make sense if all of the rocks represented the lives of all of the people on earth, who were killed towards the end of the movie. Also, if the earth were to be the victim of a solar flare like this, all vegetation and water on the planet would be destroyed, essentially rendering earth a giant rock. There are still more forms of symbolism in this movie. Some of them have less of a grim, depressing meaning.
The Tree of Life is a powerful symbol in almost every culture and religion. There is a very good chance that the large tree at the very end of the movie was meant to symbolize the Tree of Life, and more specifically Christianity’s Tree of Life in the Garden of Eden. One can assume this because the two children, running towards the tree are supposed to be Adam and Eve. The two children were saved from the destruction of mankind so the could start a fresh life. The children are holding rabbits at this point. Rabbits are some of the fastest repopulating mammals known to man. These rabbits symbolize that the children will repopulate and give humanity a fresh start. One may also have noticed that when the children were taken away on the ship, they were not alone. There were many other ships too. One could say that these other ships were carrying a male and female of other animals, just like on Noah’s Arc. All other life on earth will be wiped out, and each of these species would get the chance to start anew. While the fact that there were other animals being taken away as well is only a theory, and could only possibly be implied by the director of this film, the children are explicitly taken away and shown to go to the tree of life to give humanity a fresh start. When you consider that the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve, and Noah’s Arc could possibly all be associated with this part of the movie, it’s hard to deny that there wasn’t a little Christian symbolism intended.
There is much symbolism tied into the movie, “Knowing”. These symbols include the numbers predicting tragedies, the black rocks, and the large tree. A lot of it can be related back to Christian beliefs, however there are many ways to interpret it. Many of the uses of symbolism can also be related to the Apocalypse or the end of the world. Most viewers might not notice a lot of the uses of symbolism, without closely analyzing the story. If the movie is watched closely, and there is close attention paid to detail, these uses of symbolism are actually pretty apparent.
