This past weekend I saw Star Trek in an Imax theatre and I have to say that I am quite impressed. The movie has a great oppening scene that draws you in and sets the entire tone of the movie. There was a lot of speculation about the movie, due to the fact that Leonard Nimoy is in it. I personally thought that was a mistake, but I was wrong. With the inclusion of Leonard Nimoy to the cast and the overall plot choice that is taken it all makes sense. There was also the notion that the older star trek fans would not like it because of the remake prospect. Let me say that this is not a remake. It is both a reimagining as in the technological overhall and the new cast and a continuation of the excellence set by the original series. In my opinion this has spawned a new generation of Trekkies and should rekindle the furvor of older Trekkies… if it ever even left.
Everything in the movie fit together rather well and the cast delivered amazing performances. Zachary Quinto, who plays young Spock, is amazing. I thought that I would see a lot of his TV role as Sylar come through in his portrayal of Spock, but it was just the opposite. He burried Sylar and Spock came out and stole the show.
This movie is as close to perfect as you can make a movie. It makes you care about the characters so that you actually try to will them into what you want them to do. It has several unexpected scenes that illicit powerful reactions from you. There is excitement as well as comedic moments. There are several nods to the original series and the characters portrayed there. After all, this is the same crew, so why would their mannerisms change. I say that this is a can’t miss for any star trek fan, and if you can…see it in IMAX. It’s worth it. 5 out of 5.
