Remakes: Good or Bad

It is about remakes of TV series and films.

Remaking old films and TV shows can be either good or bad, depending on what the subject is. Most times as I have watched over the years some films or TV series can be a good thing to watch over again.

When Battle Star Galactica came to our TV sets in the 1970’s, we watched for the excitement and for the adventure for each and every character to see what would happen. Now, BSG the latest installment enriched the younger generation with new story lines but at the same time trying to keep up with the old stories at the same time.

I have personally liked both, but the newer one is darker and humorless bringing in the realism of danger and how people thought about each other as they battled not only their enemy but each other to win a hand at some point.

Here is another example:

  • Lost in Space was a campy sci-fi show based on a family that was lost.
  •  In the 1990’s someone thought to bring it back to life, Matt La-Bloc ‘Joey’ of Friend’s helped to put the film together but it bombed, in retrospect of the fact that the film was a bad idea in the first place. But when you think about it, some people did like it.

Ever since then, I have always figured that there are some things that should be left alone but not all. Old horror films from the 1930’s to 1940’s and old science fiction films should come back. But when you’re messing with Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Nightmare on Elm Street, I say leave them alone.

Hollywood has this idea that films from the 1970’s and certain shows like Buffy need to come back. What about the fans and what they want to see, Hollywood shouldn’t be telling us what to watch. Fans drive franchises, look at Star Trek, look at Star Gate and several others that all ready have fans behind them. They are the ones that call the shots, not some Hollywood director that thinks that they need to reboot a franchise that doesn’t need to be rebooted at all.

You have made a good point about letting fans drive the film makers decision on what they should film. I agree with this point, its almost tiresome to visit the movie theaters anymore.
