Pretty Woman: Movie Review of The Unrealistic Yet Adorable Romantic Comedy
Movie review of the 1990 classic romantic comedy Pretty Woman, starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere.
Cover of Pretty Woman [Blu-ray]
Director Gary Marshall loves his romantic comedies (Princess Diaries, Pretty Woman, Runaway Bride, Raising Helen,…) and he sure loves Julia Roberts. He has directed her for the 3rd time in Valentine’s Day. While we are waiting for the new Roberts/ Marshall collabration, I thought I’d get nostalgic and revisit Pretty Woman.
This is a “modern” fairy tale. After all, our “princess” Vivian (Julia Roberts) is a hooker and our “prince” Edward (Richard Gere) is a seemingly heartless and an insensitive businessman who makes money out of companies’ failures. One night, Edward lets Vivian into his car and takes her to his hotel. He is impressed by how innocent Vivian seems to be despite her profession. He also needs a date for the busy week ahead of him so he makes a deal with Vivian. Of course it is fun to watch as Vivian tries to transform herself into a lady, gets Edward to open up and treats him differently than everybody else. They have fun too. Of course things get romantic, freaking them both out. After all, how are these two supposed to have a happy ending?
There is something appealing about this movie. Sure, Richard Gere always makes a charming romantic lead and I always find Roberts extremely cute and pretty when she has the perfect wavy hair. The story doesn’t seem that far-fetched- although it obviously is one of the most unrealistic romantic comedies (yeah, there are (more) realistic ones. Let that one be another topic), it is so much fun to watch. It has a good soundtrack too, featuring Roy Orbison, David Bowie, Prince, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Roxette. It is great for a nostalgic ride. I grew up in the 90s and it always is entertaining looking back.
Watch out for the trademark scene: Beverly Hills doesn’t take a hooker seriously, even though she does have money. So our hero Edward takes her with him. Oh and boy, does Vivian show off to the shop that rejected her!

Perfect movie for the ones who believe magical love stories, like me
I don’t remember how many times I’ve watched it but still it makes me smile:) Nicely done
It is a fun movie. Julia Roberts had been my favorite actress for a long time- up until the time she decided to pop out babies and stay away from the screen. Thankfully, she is back
This is a classic.
I love that movie and Richard Gere is so hot
Yep, I love Richard
He gets better and better. I think this is my only article on Richard here on Triond, but I wrote a lot on him on my blog. He is gorgeous. : )
It certainly has stood the test of time this one -I like that hotel receptionist fella – Barney was it? I suppose in Cinderella story land he was the role of buttons in this one, he certainly had a better grip on customer service than the snooty shopkeepers in Rodeo Drive!!
Yeah, he was such a riot. So cool, good sense of humor, good heart. Yeah, I don’t think I have met anyone that good at CRM, but hey- he makes a great fictional character. : )
I loved “Pretty Woman”, love Richard Gere and Julia Roberts who were perfectly suited to their roles in the movie – an unrealistic story (yes I agree), adorable (most definitely) because it is every woman’s dream to meet her Prince Charming and be swept off her feet. I loved the scene where she returns to that snooty, up-market store to stick it to those snobby clothes attendants – great scene:) Nice review Zoey:)
